How Sentiment Analysis via Twitter can help you Beat the Market

thumbs-up-down

How much power can be gained from 140 characters you wonder? Well in the case of the Derwent Capital Hedge Fund market an awful lot. In May this year Derwent Capital Hedge Fund started trading using algorithms and a trading model that follow comments posted on Twitter.

Paul Hawtin who is the hedge fund manager of Derwent stated that “For years investors have widely accepted that financial markets are driven by fear and greed but we’ve never before had the technology or data to be able to quantify human emotions.” Now we do. This newly developed algorithm allows is based on a research paper from the University of Manchester and Indian University which concluded that there was a strong correlation between the mood on Twitter and the rise/fall of stock and commodity prices in the FTSE 100 and the Dow Jones.  There are now 175 million users on Twitter producing around 95 million posts per day, a pot of gold for data analysts and mathematicians who have already started to find new ways to analyse rapidly growing source of real time data. Remember Twitter? It’s Still Growing! (Infographic)

twitter-growth-intro

Remember Twitter? It’s that service we used a lot before Google+ came around. No, seriously, who had heard of Twitter before 2006? Almost nobody, because it was just starting, they didn’t even call it Twitter until 9 months after the first idea. 2007? A few more users. 2008 really was the first ‘bigger’ year for Twitter, but look now, 2011: over 200 million users and growing. Who would have thought. An overview. (more…)

Twitter 2.0: Creating & Distributing the Message

twitter-2-0

As you are used from State of Search, being the best conference coverage website out there, we are covering SES New York. We have bloggers reporting, but we’ve also decided to take a different angle this year. We have asked a few speakers to describe their own presentation. Because after all, what better coverage than from the source itself? In this first one you well get an insight of what Paul Madden is talking about.

After what seems like an age I am at last on my way to SES New York for another talk on Twitter, so sitting here in Dublin airport with the first beer of the day beside me here is a quick post on what I will be covering this year.

On the panel with me are Hollis Thomases, the author of Twitter Marketing An Hour A Day and Michael Gray (Graywolf as you no doubt already know). I expect that Hollis will be giving her normal sage advice on the benefits of doing Twitter the right way and Michael and I will be looking at alternatives to that. For many businesses Hollis’ way is perfect and she really knows her stuff but mine as normal takes the position of “lets see how far we can push things without ending up in trouble”. (more…)

5 ways for a Local Businesses to grow their Twitter Followers and Business

twitter-work

Similar to Twitter’s little blue bird, time flies. It was this time a year ago that I wrote my most successful post on State of Search – 10 ways to grow your twitter followers and 10 essential tools to do it I must admit, I was surprised at how well it was received, to this date it has received 39 comments, over 400 re-tweets, 20,000 page views and nearly 13,000 visitors via search engines.

Today I want to revisit the Twittersphere but look specifically at how small local businesses can utilise Twitter to grow their followers, but most importantly their business. One thing I have noticed about Twitter is that some people are too caught up in the numbers game and try to artificially increase their followers.  Local businesses really benefit from interacting, engaging and developing relationships with users who are local, so quick fixes such the search queries below won’t help much. Matt Bailey: Founder of Site Logic focused on missing pieces

Matt started by saying you need to establish how you are to be measured at the beginning of every project. Define how accountable you are to that. There may be things that are out of your control. Increased leads don’t necessarily mean increased profits so make sure you have an accurate picture.

Defining your lead value is vitally important and working out what it is based on is essential in the planning phase. If you are held accountable to the revenue generated you need to incorporate your analytics into a CRM and question the data that comes back from the CRM.

Almost there: the official Twitter Analytics tool (plus some cash for Twitter)

According to Mashable Twitter has released its new Analytics Tool to a select group of users to start testing out the product. This means the launch is not far away.

The new tool is probably a welcome add on to the existing tools out there. It is mainly focussed on the stuff people can see about their own account: which tweets are successful, how many retweets did you get, what caused people to follow and unfollow etcetera.

The tool will be a competitor to other similar tools with which you can already do stuff like this. It looks however that Twitter is going to give this one out for free. At least in the beginning. That will most probably make it a very much used tool. (more…)
