majestic-seo-logo-1

Link analysis tool Majestic SEO has been founded in 2004 but has only made real big steps in the past three years. In that time the tool has become one of the ‘must use’ tools in the industry.

Majestic has been rolling out new features frequently and has been crawling like crazy. In their last count they had crawled 319,570,555,501 pages and 3,146,399,791,446 Unique URLs. With that it has, so it claims, “the world’s largest link map”.

In a webinar next week Majestic will be demonstrating again a new functionality: MajesticSEO Site Explorer.

Top-10 SEO Firefox Plug-ins

firefox-add-ons

The other day I had to setup a new laptop and while doing so, obviously one of the installations I did was Firefox which I’m using heavily for some years now. So, the installation finished and I double-clicked the desktop-icon for the first time. Holy… that was fast (almost unbelievable that Firefox boots *that* fast!) but the second thought I had was something like “hmm… why does it look so naked and where are all the useful icons?” and all of a sudden I realized how much I got used to having plug-ins installed to perform the various online marketing tasks day in and day out.

Inspired by the post Top-10 FREE SEO Tools where Sam Murray mainly talks about the most useful tools out there and since I had to re-install and configure my setup anyways I compiled a top-10 list with the most useful SEO plug-ins – here we go: (more…)

SEO Tools 101 – The most under-utilised tool: Your Clients

I’m always jotting down useful ideas, tools, pointers, thoughts etc. etc. for SEO – everything from chats in the pub to conferences – there’s endless amounts of information out there to help make your life easier and your rankings climb.

However I think there’s a really crucial tool that just doesn’t get used enough by SEOs when working on projects, and that’s communication.  Especially with clients or stakeholders.

Get them on board and it’s amazing the difference it can have on both your stress levels and your keyword positions.

I want to give a couple of examples of this point, as the idea for this post actually came to me from a client a couple of weeks ago.

Using Your Competitor’s Tactics to Gain a Competitive Edge – A4UExpo London 2010

It’s all about winning not losing

Sam Crocker from Distilled is my first presentation of the day, and it’s most definitely a winner. Sam is talking about focusing on going beyond just protecting your site, and thinking about getting on the offensive.

Some initial explanations of what this means. Think about looking at static vs dynamic. It’s not just about letting information come to you, go out and hunt down information that can help you and your site. e.g.

  • Patent applications
  • Scrape competition for 404s
  • Monitor job boards
  • Find ‘movers and shakers’ (more…)

History pin: the extra use of Streetview

When Google, or any other service for that matter, launches a new product it is almost never immediately clear how useful the product can really be. That was also the case with Streetview. Yes, it was a very nice feature and you could actually see your own house if you were lucky (in my case even my car could be found). But the real use? With the open web, the real use of a product usually becomes clearer when others adopt a product to start using it for their own purposes. The integration of different products makes that a product all of a sudden makes sense.

Now there is already a lot of ‘sense’ in Streetview, but Historypin is one of these features which gives that little extra touch. This Google Maps Mash up in my opinion is something which could be very usefull in for example history lessons at schools. (more…)

Find out which universal results Google shows for all of your important search querys

Google is showing more and more universal results blended in the regular search results for different queries. For the search queries we’re targeting I wanted to try and map which kinds of results Google shows. I started doing it by hand but soon realized it was going to take me lot of time for one client, let alone for all our clients. So I started looking for a piece of software that could help me out. Roy Huiskes adviced me to use Mozenda. Mozenda is best described as a piece of software to gather data from the web, based on a defined track of actions. I tried solving my issue and succeeded! Here´s how to do it yourself in 10 easy steps: (more…)

Best Practices with Link Research Tools

When it comes to link building I use a lot of different tools you’ve probably heard of. To manage links I use the Raven Link Manager and Buzzstream. To find backlinks I use Majesticseo, Linkscape, Sistrix and of course Yahoo Site Explorer. But there’s one other tool I tried about 6 months ago for the first time. I’m talking about Christoph Cemper’s Link Research Tools. To be honest with you I wasn’t convinced about the toolbox in that period. I was struck by the difficult abbreviations Cemper uses and the amount of data I got. But last month I decided to give the Link Research Tools another try, knowing Christoph made a lot of improvements. And I’ve to admit: now I love it. By the way, if you want to try the toolbox, grab your free day pass code from the comments!
