Breaking out of the SEO Echo Chamber

start-up

Last week I was fascinated by Paul Miller’s story of his year without the internet. Whilst I wouldn’t go so far as to claim that I feel the internet is corrupting my soul, I have been feeling like I’m stuck in an SEO (or perhaps more accurately a search industry) echo chamber of late.

It’s not that I don’t love this industry, I do; however I’ve been making a concerted effort to change my usual reading habits in search of something new. To be clear, I’m not talking cute pictures of kittens (can you read pictures of kittens?!); I’m not convinced that those are likely to bring me much in the way of inspiration, new perspectives, or new ways of thinking.

Today I’m sharing some of the sites I’ve been reading of late, along with further recommendations from other State of Search writers and various other kind souls who responded via twitter. I’ve grouped them into categories to make the list a little easier to digest…

Ready? Let’s go.

Germany & Search: April 2013 Edition

German Flag

How time flies. April is gone as well – and still, there is no summer in sight. But at least there’s no more snow over here in Germany.

Content-wise it felt a little lower in April, this might be due to vacation or just because everyone is busy visiting conferences such as the SMX series which took place twice (Sydney and Munich). But nevertheless – I of course did collect the best pieces for “Germany Search” edition 04-2013 here on State of Search: (more…)

Gianluca Fiorelli’s Super Search Update – March edition

gianluca-fiorell-links

What a month March has been!

We had conferences, Matt Cutts announced that Panda is going to be implemented in the real time algorithm (if it is not already rolled out in it) and the quality of the posts shared about our industry was really remarkable.

Somehow a fil rouge is clear amongst every post, presentation and video: Internet Marketing has become a sort of complex puzzle, where many different pieces and professional figures needs to links one each other in order to compose a figure : content, SEO, analytics, social media, design.

Content is at the base, but we should be all aware that content strategy is not the same as saying copywriting. Content Strategy is to copywriting the same as IA is to programming a web, and the content strategist is becoming a professional figure every agency or business company should start including in its organization chart. Germany & Search: March 2013 Edition

German Flag

It’s soo ridiculous… March comes to an end and I still see the damn snow when looking outside of my office in Germany. That not nice, really! However… the depressing white – which also covered parts of THE German-conference event in March – SEOcampixx in Berlin – did not prevent from producing quite a bit a great content during this month. So, let’s get straight into “Germany Search” edition 03-2013 here on StateOfSearch: (more…)

Germany & Search: February 2013 Edition

German Flag

Just back from a beautiful and sunny vacation in Thailand to the – still – damn cold German winter. Tried to dig through as much content as I could in just two days and therefore I’m happy to present “Germany & Search” edition 02-2013 here on StateOfSearch. This is what we got in February: (more…)

Gianluca Fiorelli’s Super Search Update – February edition

Gianluca

I don’t know if it happened to you too, but this month when I did not see any Panda Refresh official notification I felt disappointed. What the heck, Google, after three months in row with Panda Updates around the 20th of the month you don’t send us our monthly rate Panda checking dedicated hours?

I suspect they forgot it, because they were too busy with Interflora.

Interflora… It was a long time the world of SEO wasn’t so intrigued by a manual penalization. From the morning of February 21, the posts about Interflora have literally blossomed like flowers in spring. Let me list the ones that I found more useful: (more…)

Best Read and Most Shared Posts of January 2013 on State of Search

ipad-reading

Holy crap, January is already gone again. Has there ever been a first month of the year which passed so quickly? Yes, I know, all Januaries have 31 days, but still, this one seemed to have passed quicker than others.

Maybe it is because so many things happened this month. Google Updates, events, Facebook stepping into search and many more things happened in this month. And a lot of great content happened! Content right here on State of Search off course. Maybe so much great stuff that you missed it. So below you will find an overview of the best read and most shared posts in January 2013. To make it more ‘honest’ (since some posts are on there longer) we also took the last week of December into account (as we will do next month with the last week of January). (more…)

Gianluca Fiorelli’s Super Search Update – January edition

Gianluca

2013 has started with a frenzy spirit, as if it wanted to make clear it is going to be a totally different thing from its elder brother 2012. This sort of frenziness was clearly reflected in the quality and diversity of the content shared in our Search and Web Marketing industry.

New year, new perspectives and some old baggage of 2012 still bothering us, this how I would define the nature of what was shared in this first month of the year.

Obviously, and somehow a sequel of the classic preview/best of posts of every end of year, we have seen many articles of that kind been shared. Many, sincerely, very forgettable, but others surely need a second read because they offer more than what simply written: they offer new ideas and new perspectives. (more…)

Useful, Inspiring and Influential Posts of 2012

sharing-end-of-2012

So hope you have all enjoyed Christmas, I have two children (one more on the way) and Christmas is very much a time of reflection. Partly because its the one time in the year when I actually shut down (at least for a few days). As I sit down to write this post some people are still enjoying the festivity and some are back in work getting ready for 2013.

So I’ll admit I love researched, data driven posts (Little Geeky, but that’s what floats my boat) but I thought I’d share with you some of the articles, videos and blogs which I have found useful, inspiring or influential over the past twelve months. (more…)

Germany & Search: November 2012 Edition

German Flag

Another month comes to an end and therefore it’s time again for “Germany & Search” here on StateOfSearch. We’re now counting the third edition. Again, quite a bit of stuff went down this month. For me, November usually is one of the busiest months of the year – seems to be true for a lot of people as well – especially looking at the content that has been produced, events gone down and status updates being made. So, let’s get right into this. (more…)
