Grimm’s Fairy Tales Google Logo with Little Red Cap (Little Red Riding Hood)

google_red_cap

On Thursday Google honours The Brothers Grimm with a little fairytale on the homepage of the search engine that you will probably know. The animated doodle is about the folk tale Little Red Riding Hood or simply Little Red Cap. The story was first published by Charles Perrault but later the Brothers Grimm made a more friendly and positive version of the tale. Main difference that in the version of Perrault in the end the young girl dies, in the version of the two brothers Little Red Cap survives and lives happily ever after :-) . The story is told by Google in 21 different tiles. (more…)

The New Face of YouTube: The Redesign, Annotations and InVideo Programming

Quick editorial note: Today (the publishing date of this post) happens to be Ned’s birthday as well, so be sure to congratulate him in your comment ;) .

The different types of media that is being consumed on the Internet has changed largely over the last few years. Increases in broadband penetration and improvements in mobile, 3G (or 4G for many of us now) speeds have lead to a rapidly increasing change in how we consume media online. It is now not irregular to see widespread use of higher quality image formats, more advanced usage of HTML5 and other interactive technologies, not to mention an exponential increase in the usage of video online. These are used to make engaging and interactive experiences to create websites that stand out and offer very different functionalities that we have become used to over the years (the BBC is a great example of this).

Facebook Nearby: Facebook’s Local Search, Opportunity for Offers

Nearby-featured-2

In the past few years many have discussed the possibility of Facebook going into search. After all, the Social giant has got an enormous user base and has the knowledge of who and what you like so it would be interesting to see if they could give you the right ‘answers’ on your searches.

Many have said that Facebook and search would not work, either because search is ‘a whole different ballgame’ or that people don’t go to Facebook to search, but to interact with their friends. On top of that Facebook has a deal with Bing so the ‘need’ to do search isn’t as big.

But like Google changes, so does Facebook and wherever there lies opportunity they will not hesitate to grab opportunity, as long as it is connected to what the ‘business’ does. And so now we see Facebook getting into “search”, but not as a ‘regular’ search engine, but closely related to that what they were already doing: local search, recommended by friends. And with that it is opening up another channel for their Facebook Offers. (more…)

The Growing (not provided) Problem and Why Google Will Act in 2013

Google-keywords-search-not-provided

Perhaps my boldest prediction for 2013 is that Google will likely be forced to take action over (not provided) and whether or not they opt to pass keyword referrer data from SSL search. My view is that with the percentage of users searching via SSL by default growing consistently (through default adoption by browsers, operating systems, etc.) they will find themselves in a situation whereby either their Premium Analytics product is no longer viable or they will be forced to pass keyword data for organic search referrers the same way they still do for paid.

There are a number of options for how they could address this problem. Below I have outlined the most probable approaches they could take and any risks they may have to take in so doing. With all the buzz going around twitter about the fact that Chrome will be switching to SSL search by default it seemed like a good time to share these thoughts. (more…)

Another month comes to an end and therefore it’s time again for “Germany & Search” here on StateOfSearch. We’re now counting the third edition. Again, quite a bit of stuff went down this month. For me, November usually is one of the busiest months of the year – seems to be true for a lot of people as well – especially looking at the content that has been produced, events gone down and status updates being made. So, let’s get right into this. (more…)

UPDATE: Fixed: Google Webmaster Tools Bug Re-verifies Old Accounts

GWT-2

It seems as if there is a bug in Google Webmaster Tools at the moment. Several webmasters were yesterday suddenly seeing sites to which their access was revoked show up again in Google Webmasters. Many of these sites are old sites agencies used to manage.

Others are reporting they are getting notifications that sites from clients they now control have their old agencies or former employees added as a new verified owner.

UPDATE: the issue now seems resolved (see below)
