Posts on State of Search about ‘Linkbuilding’

The Four Faces of Linkbuilding

4-faces-lb-intro

I always say linkbuilding is a profession of its own. It is hard work which not every SEO can do. And even with all the changes Google is making links will continue to play an important role in optimizing your website.

But even if you are not an expert, linkbuilding is still something you can start off doing. And if you do it is always nice to ‘get some help’. Maybe this infographic will help a little. (more…)

Majestic SEO giving away the top 1 million websites

Majestic-Badge

It’s Christmas Day and Majestic SEO decided it was time for a present of their own. Majestic is now giving away a CSV file of the top 1 million websites (as of today), based on the Majestic Million list.

The list can be downloaded for only a small amount of time between now and (probably) new years, so you better be fast! (more…)

How To Build Those Links (infographic)

how-build-links-infographic-intro

Linkbuilding, it still is (one of) the most important aspects of optimization for search engines. There will not be many SEO’s who will disagree there. But as simple as it sounds: “Get links!”, it is not easy. Linkbuilding takes time and effort.

Many also don’t know where to start. Will I be sending out tons of non-personalized e-mails? Will I be buying the links? Or will I be begging for them? This infographic could be a start. Or would the linkbuilders amongst us disagree on that..? What do you think? (more…)

5 simple-but-effective SEO/Social tactics I’ve seen over the last month..

blindfolded

Happy All-Hallow’s Day State of Searchers! Or All Saints Day for those that prefer. Let’s start this post with a little ‘Did You Know’ fact just to ensure it is educational from top to bottom. So, did you know…

“In Western Christian theology, All Saints Day commemorates all those who have attained the beatific vision in Heaven.” (Thank you wikipedia). That sounds pretty special to me, a vision of happiness, perfection and clarity. One can dream eh.  But on that note, how about a little happiness and clarity closer to home? SEO heaven?

Yes that is my rather awkward seguing into the main event, some great examples of simple linkbait or visibility tactics that I’ve seen in the past few weeks. Rather than theorise or show amazing examples/ideas that are nearly impossible for the average company to implement, I thought I’d share some examples of marketing tactics that I’ve been impressed with recently simply because they were so very, well, simple. Off Page Optimisation: Successful Link Development

Off-Page-Optimisation-Successful-Link-Development

I’ve spent the past few days in the motherland (Norway for those of you that don’t know I’m a Viking…how could you have missed it). This is the second time I’ve spoken at SEM Konferansen and it’s fantastic to see the growth in the search market both from an interest in search and number of agencies popping up since the last time I was here. It’s such a great conference to attend and INMA (the Norwegian IAB) does a great job at organising a really good quality conference, in fact I believe a few of the larger conference series could learn a thing or two from these guys. Well done Ola!

Norway is relatively new onto the SEO scene and for me, as a proud Norwegian, it’s very important that my fellow Norwegians gets it right from the word go. So this time I chose to speak about Successful Link Development. I actually changed the title to Successful Off Page Optimisation in the end as I wante to include social signals, as in my opinion this will be more and more important going forward, we are not only building links but mentions. As a self proclaimed white hat, I do white hat link development (maybe the occasional grey) and although my black hat friends might say this is naive, it works, we’ve done very successful link development with the techniques showed in this presentation. Link development doens’t always need to be shady, it’s simply a way of marketing your site with the purpose of generating links as well as traffic. Unless you do SEO for one of the 3 P’s, or insurance keyterms for example, where I think it’s difficult to get top rankings without maybe buying a link or two.  In the presentation below I’ve shared Verve Searches most used link development techniques, given a few examples and given a picture of the results. To contriary belief, link devleopment doesn’t need to be difficult, often there are opportunities to be had that are quite easy to negotiate. (more…)

ThinkVisibility, Linkworthy Stories and a Link Opportunity to Share

i-won

I was lucky enough to be selected to speak at the recent Think Visibility conference, and did so on behalf of SEO PR Training, a second company that I run in partnership with Claire Thompson. By way of background, at SEO PR Training we put our mutual PR experience to use offering training for SEO professionals seeking to learn more about the media knowledge and skills utilised by PR professionals, that can be turned to our (SEO) advantage to secure high-quality links in online editorial.

If you weren’t at ThinkVisibility and are interested in “How to Find the Angle“, I wrote up my presentation on the SEO PR Training website. In summary we looked at what constitutes “newsworthy” including (amongst other things) stories that have human interest. After my session a webmaster/publisher whom some of you may be familiar with, namely Jason Dale of Loquax competition directory – came to speak to me, as he was in agreement with a particular point I made, and wanted to make me aware of a good link opportunity on that site, which I can share with the community. First, a little context… (more…)

Review: Ontolo – The Linkbuilding Book

As our connections to each other are the stuff of human relationships, so are links between sites the very stuff of the web.

I was therefore overjoyed to read Ontolo, and to find that here is a documented guide; from concept to objective to  methodology to realisation; for pretty much every  quality method of building and attracting the links that matter. (I felt I’d found a kindred spirit and something of a validation of our more PR focused approach at theMediaFlow too.)

Authored by Garrett French and Ben Wills Ontolo – The Linkbuilding Book, is possibly the most thorough documentation of linkbuilding to success. It is important to point out that the foundation of the Ontolo mindset reads to me as one of “links as business-driving” endeavours, rather than purely “links for rank sake”. On the other hand, if you’re more into this kind of crap, then this book isn’t for you. (more…)

8 things linkbuilders shouldn’t do when asking for links

Linkbuilding, we all know its one of the, maybe even the, biggest factors in SEO. Get enough quality links to your website and you will automatically start ranking. Well, almost. There are a lot more factors to consider off course. But fact is that links matter. A lot. And thats why the art of linkbuilding exists. And its truly an art I would say. Especially if you look at those who can’t do it.

Getting links can be done in many ways. The best way (writing good content) takes up a lot of time. Therefore people tent to aim for the less time consuming efforts. And the best way to do that? Just ask! But come on people, if you ask for links, please think before you pop the question.

As a site owner we will probably all be getting link (exchange) requests. As an owner of sites like State of Search and in the past Searchcowboys I might be getting even a few more. And to be honest, most of them are worthless crap requests. I thought I would share some with you. In this post you will see how you know you will NOT be getting that link. Tomorrow I will tell you what will get you the links… (more…)

yahoo-site-explorer-closes

When Yahoo and Bing first announced they would partner up many in the industry expected this was bad news for Yahoo Site Explorer. That would inevitably be shut down. It took a while but Yahoo now indeed has announced it will be closing Yahoo Site Explorer.

Working with clients to develop a robust and informative keyphrase seed list

chapter 5 keyword research

It’s been over 3 years now since a potential client (a B&B owner) from Bridgend told me that he wanted to rank Number 1 in Google for hotels.

Try as I might, I was unable to convince him that both he as a business owner, and I as an internet marketer, would likely have more success choosing a range of keyphrases that were less competitive, and more relevant to the product and services that he offered.  Suffice to say, it was not the beginning of a long and fruitful relationship.  I wonder where he is now?
