Eric Schmidt at D9: “Google Will Get Social Data In Alternative Ways”

    D9–AllThingsD-schmidt

It is maybe my favorite conference which I have never attended: the D-conferences, organized by All Things Digital. In these conferences Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg interview industry leaders. This results in many great talks where Mossberg and Swisher meanwhile also know how to get some interesting stuff out of them.

At the current D-conference, D9, they interviewed again several ‘big names’. One of them being Eric Schmidt. The former Google CEO sat down and discussed in a very light way his current role at Google, how he is never going to leave there (he even told them Google could probably store his coffin somewhere in the Plex) and about failing social. ChrisSherman

In 1,5 weeks time yet again a new conference season starts with SMX London 2011. This Advanced SMX, the only advanced in Europe, has a very interesting line up of speakers, amongst which some State of Search bloggers and for example Bing’s Cedric Chambaz, Christine Churchill, Yahoo’s Jon Myers and Stephen Pavlovich.

The keynote will be given by Chris Sherman, who as you might know also runs SMX together with Danny Sullivan. We talked to Chris Sherman about SMX London 2011, his keynote and the future of search. (more…)

It was the final and probably one of the best sessions at SES London 2011: Social Media and the Marketing Mix with Kristjan Mar Hauksson and Mel Carson. Both gave a very inspiring presentation. Afterwards both got interviewed. Find their interviews below.

Kristjan about how Social Media Marketing made a huge impact on the Iceland tourism industry and Mel Carson about Microsft’s look at social.

Bing’s European boss Cedric Chambaz: “Search is a very personal experience”

    Cedric-Chambaz

It is about time we start to take Bing seriously. They’ve reached a market share of 30% in the US, are the only one growing in the UK and just got out of beta in France. Still many in Europe don’t consider them to be a grown up player in the market. Bing’s intent is to change that.

At the head of EMEA Marketing Lead – SMB Advertising for Microsoft Advertising Cedric Chambaz is working on just that. He spoke at the International Search Summit in Munich and will be speaking at SMX London (on the same panel as me by the way, so I am honored!) in May, which is combined with the London version of ISS. We had the opportunity to ask Cedric some questions about Bing, Europe and more. Find his answers below. (more…)

Behind the Code in the Hoxton Hotel’s £1 Sale

    Codegent Plan

Hi Everyone! Some of you will remember that I wrote an article here on State of Search about integrating online and offline marketing efforts and as a case study I used the Hoxton Hotel’s £1 sale from January of this year (2011). Although there were a lot of positive things to say about the efforts in general – I still think it is one of the single greatest “free PR” efforts in recent times – there were some technical concerns with the site and a number of people who complained about their experience.

After the most recent installment of the sale yesterday I had a great chat with the men behind the website to get a feel for what they learned from last time, what they improved and what still needs improvement. A very big thank you to Mark McDermott (Founder) and Aidan Kane (Lead Developer) from Codegent for taking the time to speak to me about everything going on “behind the code”. (more…)

Do search and social match? A talk with Joost de Valk (@yoast) and Olivier Blanchard (@thebrandbuilder)

    joost-de-valk-olivier-blanchard

Search and Social. Are they a match made in heaven, are they enemies or are they something which you should do both, but separate from each other? At the Fusion Marketing Experience (#FusionMex) in Brussels this week (I recommend this conference by the way, very insightful one) I had the chance to put a Social Media expert and a Search Expert next to each other to have them discuss the two.

Olivier Blanchard (@thebrandbuilder), author of the book “Social Media ROI” and a well recognized Social Media expert on the subject of actually making it work business wise, and Joost de Valk (@yoast) a well know search and WordPress consultant, talked about their separate knowledge areas but also how they could merge. The video was taped outside so you might here some background noice.

SES London 2011 Interview: Li Evans

At SES London 2011 there are many knowledgable people. We see them, talk to them and interact them. But if you are not here, that is difficult to do, so we try to ask them questions and share that knowledge with you. In this interview we talk to Li Evans, author of the book “Social Media Marketing“.

In the  video she discusses the book, how people should look at social and gives away some free tips!
