Tips on live blogging a conference, to make your life more easy

Yesterday I spoke at SASCON, a conference organized by several Manchester SEOs. The organization did a really good job. The conference was organized for the first time and that meant a lot of things were new to both organizers and visitors. And that made it a refreshing conference. The organization tried to look at as much as possible to make the event a succes. These days I mostly speak at conferences, but as a media partner for some conferences (like the upcoming A4U Expo) I’ve also blogged on conferences a lot.

At conferences you can see a lot of bloggers sitting, mostly in te front row, typing and typing. These girls and guys are covering the event. That’s a good thing, because after all, not everybody can attend the conference. With Twitter it has already become more easy to follow what is going on at a conference but it is still a very nice thing that you can read back blogposts about a conference. Yesterday at SASCON I was especially impressed with bloggers Kieron Hughes and David Towers who managed to get a lot of content out there in very little time. I saw posts coming by from Kieron even before a session was actually finished. That’s a hard work because you have to pay attention and write at the same time.

I have been blogging conferences for years. And I can tell you: it can be a lot of hard work if you want to do it right. That’s why I’ve gathered some tips for those of you who plan on live covering a conference. Just to make the blogging life a bit easier. (more…)

For many eyetracking research is new, for many others its the holy grail. It tells you where people are looking at. This can tell you a lot. The session about eye tracking therefor attracted a good crowd. The speakers all took a different angle at eyetracking research and what to do with it. It turned out to be a very informative session which didn’t just make eyetracking look perfect but gave hands on insights in how to use these studies.

On the web you are what you publish: opening keynote SES New York

The opening keynote of SES New York this year was done by David Meerman Scott. He opened with an example of Cindy Gordon who started a theme park. She told just seven people she was opening. The seven people were influential bloggers. Off course they started to write about it. Within seven hours 350 million people had heard of the Harry Potter theme park.

These days its about getting the attention. When David travels he asks people questions. He asks the audience the questions on what they have done in the last six months:

  • Have you answered a direct mail advertisement ? (0,5% says yes)
  • Have you gone to main stream media (22%)
  • Have you gone to the yellow pages (4%)
  • Have you’ve used Google? (100%)

He then shows a video of his earlier speaking engagements where he asked the same question. (more…)

SES New York: you have to make it there

Probably the biggest conference in search engine marketing is Search Engine Strategies New York. With a line up of over 200 speakers divided over 70+ sessions you are bound to find something of your liking in New York.

Next to the sessions SES New York however is about a lot more. In New York the exhibition area is bigger than anywhere else. If you compare it to for example London: in London there were five booths in New York the Expo Floor has over a 100 exhibitors there, making it a place where you can very well make deals, get to know more people from the industry and find out which tool is hot or not. SEO copywriting: mythbusting & takeaways

The session “SEO copywriting: mythbusting & takeaways” had high expectations, at least from my end. And the two speakers, David Brinks and Ramon Eijkemans lived up to those expectations. They tried to ‘bust’ some SEO-copywriting myths and showed the room what you can do to make better content and do SEO at the same time.

The Mythes they busted:

  • keywordstuffing
  • less=more
  • this boring headline
  • seo copywriting = boring texts
  • content = king
