SES San Francisco 2010: Search – where to next?

Here we are with the next session: “Search – where to next?” First on stage is Marc Poirer and he is going to talk about search marketing as a discipline and how it changed in the last years and of course where it will be moving to next.

Let’s start with some statistics:
- Adults spent 34% of media time online
- Online represents 12% of media spent
- But this is massively increasing: It will be doubled in 2014! (in the US)

A wonderful good morning from San Francisco – this is the first day at SES SF 2010 and State of Search will be covering live. We’re already having some delay but the opening keynote by Jeffrey Hayzlett is going to start any minute. Please also make sure you’ll be following @state_ofsearch on twitter for some real-time action.

I’ll be updating this post on a regular basis – hopefully taking away some interesting statements out of this keynote – so stay tuned. Well… at least I’ll try to – the wifi does not seem to be too stable right now… (more…)

An interview with SES keynote speaker Jeffrey Hayzlett

SES San Francisco is rapidly getting closer. Only three weeks away until SES, combined with the Connected Marketing week, opens its doors. SES is getting broader and broader. Its not just about search anymore, its about integrating marketing.

One way how that shows is by the keynote speaker they invited for day 1: Jeffrey Hayzlett.

Jeffrey Hayzlett was the Chief Marketing Officer and Vice President, Eastman Kodak Company and now runs his own business, the Hayzlett Group. He travels the world advising companies and speaking. I got the chance to talk to him this week for webmasterradio.fm. He talked about his keynote, what it takes to change companies (look in a mirror) and much more.

You can listen to that interview here.

Matt Cutts about SSL, privacy, SEO, hacking and more at Search University

In Belgium a group of search marketers have set up a very interesting initiative: Search University. In different sessions you get informed on all sorts of different topics. And they are doing good. Already in their second edition they managed to get Matt Cutts to talk about SEO. And more. See the video below. Cutts is nice and open, and has a nice and interesting talk.

What BrightonSEO Tells Me About Search-as-Discipline

On Friday I went along to the second #BrightonSEO conference. It’s a free SEO conference organised by Kelvin Newman of Site Visibility and despite being a free conference, there was certainly a lot of information packed into a hot and stuffy afternoon. In fact; attendance was such that more than a handful of people had to sit on the floor. Although nobody seemed to mind!

There have already been a number of great round-up posts, and if you are looking for an overview of all the presentations then check out Peter Handley’s run through (as guest) on Holistic Search and also Robin Houghton, at Eggbox Marketing. In addition Paddy Moogan’s overview offers a considered review of many of the presentations, along with a summary take-away tip. I wanted to take a slightly different approach, and reflect on what the presentations (when considered together), tell us about the state of the search marketing industry using key points from the speakers.

It seemed to me that there were two consistent recurrent themes; which were that social media is already firmly on the search agenda and that our marketing activities must be underpinned by process and measurement. Definitely a coming of age event. (more…)

A summer interview with… Mike Grehan (@mikegrehan): “the most interesting time to be involved in the industry”

There are many great search-experts out there. We decided we wanted to give some extra attention to some of them. Therefore we will be interviewing some of these experts. During the entire summer you will be served with short interviews with influential people in the industry. You will be seeing interviews with the likes of Joost de Valk, Marcus Tandler, Chris Sherman, Mike Grehan and Danny Sullivan, and off course our bloggers! Be aware that some interviews will be published in the newsletter!

Today: One of the Godfathers in search and a man I appreciate highly: Mike Grehan.

A cool new cooperation: State of Search becomes media partner for SES

The website State of Search first came to live at SES London 2010. The first posts were about that conference where we as founders (Lisa and me) were joined by some of our friends. SES and State of Search are therefore always connected. And they kept on being connected in the months after SES London when we covered other SES events like Amsterdam and New York. But now the connection has been made ‘official’. Starting last week State of Search now is an official SES mediapartner! And we are very proud of it!

As a media partner State of Search will off course be covering the events extensively through our posts and our special SES-event pages. But not just that. We will be bringing news about the events going up to the events, we will be sending out a special SES Newsletter and we will be giving you discounts (already 20% off for the next one (see below) !) and the occasional free tickets for the SES events! We are looking forward to all the SES events we will be covering and we will be back with more news about SES soon.

SES San Francisco 2010

The first SES we will be covering as an official SES partner is SES San Francisco 2010. This SES event is immediately a cracker. For the first time SES is turning into a full online marketing event, now called the “Connected Marketing Week” with sessions throughout an entire week. Already 1,500 people have registered so far so the conference will not only be a learning but also a networking event.

International Search Summit Berlin: laws of international search marketing, KLM and international video

International Search Summit 2010 BerlinTo be honest, I was a bit shocked, when I entered the room for the first International Search Summit in Berlin this Monday. About 10 attendees were waiting for Webcertain‘s boss Andy Atkins-Krüger to launch the conference. The lack of local publicity for the conference, which isn’t known in Germany, probably caused this low attendance. Maybe also the combination with the “Localization World” didn’t work out. Translators and Search Marketers are two different species as Isabella Ballanti impressively showed in her presentation later on the day.

Calijn van Lennep, member of the E-Commerce team at KLM, was the first speaker of the day. She talked about how to manage a brand on global websites. Although this topic isn’t really search related, Calijn showed some interesting insights how KLM deals with global and local content on their 116 websites. Another interesting point was Social Media. Calijn said that KLM doesn’t have a real social media strategy, but they just try out things. During the ash cloud problems Twitter and Facebook were the most important communication channels though!
