SES San Francisco 2010: Developing great content

Now here we are – last session of the day titled developing great content and packed with four speakers (Wendi Sturges, Heather Lloyd-Martin, Rand Fishkin and Michael DeHaven). Let’s see what those four brought for us.

Things get started and Wendi of Yahoo! states that they still think content is king (yeez… that thing just doens’t want to go away!) and as they do have a lot of different content resources like Editorial, blogs, video, 3rd party content, Y! Original, etc. the care about those (more…)

SEW Labs: a new session format at SES San Francisco

Search Engine Watch Labs (SEW Labs) is a new format session for SES. It combines the popular site clinic approach with a crowdsourcing aspect. Each lab session is preceded by a primer session to prepare the attendees for the event.Today I visited the first PPC Lab. Well, to be honest, I didn’t go to the Primer session, but I went to the crowdsourcing part. (more…)

SES San Francisco 2010: Link Building Basics

Here we are – back from the coffee break, had some nicely purred Starbucks – not too bad! I’m in the link building basics now; hopefully I can learn something there ;) I’m probably not repeating all the basics here (not sure how detailed they’ll be) but of course I’m trying to catch the most important message of each of the panelists.

Debra Mastaler is the first one up – let’s see what “basics” she brought. So according to her agenda, she’s going to talk about ink popularity and link influences. (more…)

SES San Francisco 2010: Successful Information Architecture

We’re back after the lunch break with a session I’m really excited about: Successful Information Architecture. On the panel we have Shari Thurow and Eleanor Hong – moderated by Adam Audette. Let’s see what these three have to say about successful IA. Please also be sure to check out my introduction post on IA pitfalls I wrote a week ago.

OK – Adam Audette is not here so Bill Hunt takes over the moderation cause Adam didn’t make it. Anyways, first up is Shari. (more…)

SES San Francisco 2010: Search – where to next?

Here we are with the next session: “Search – where to next?” First on stage is Marc Poirer and he is going to talk about search marketing as a discipline and how it changed in the last years and of course where it will be moving to next.

Let’s start with some statistics:
- Adults spent 34% of media time online
- Online represents 12% of media spent
- But this is massively increasing: It will be doubled in 2014! (in the US)

A wonderful good morning from San Francisco – this is the first day at SES SF 2010 and State of Search will be covering live. We’re already having some delay but the opening keynote by Jeffrey Hayzlett is going to start any minute. Please also make sure you’ll be following @state_ofsearch on twitter for some real-time action.

I’ll be updating this post on a regular basis – hopefully taking away some interesting statements out of this keynote – so stay tuned. Well… at least I’ll try to – the wifi does not seem to be too stable right now… (more…)

An interview with SES keynote speaker Jeffrey Hayzlett

SES San Francisco is rapidly getting closer. Only three weeks away until SES, combined with the Connected Marketing week, opens its doors. SES is getting broader and broader. Its not just about search anymore, its about integrating marketing.

One way how that shows is by the keynote speaker they invited for day 1: Jeffrey Hayzlett.

Jeffrey Hayzlett was the Chief Marketing Officer and Vice President, Eastman Kodak Company and now runs his own business, the Hayzlett Group. He travels the world advising companies and speaking. I got the chance to talk to him this week for webmasterradio.fm. He talked about his keynote, what it takes to change companies (look in a mirror) and much more.

You can listen to that interview here.

Matt Cutts about SSL, privacy, SEO, hacking and more at Search University

In Belgium a group of search marketers have set up a very interesting initiative: Search University. In different sessions you get informed on all sorts of different topics. And they are doing good. Already in their second edition they managed to get Matt Cutts to talk about SEO. And more. See the video below. Cutts is nice and open, and has a nice and interesting talk.

What BrightonSEO Tells Me About Search-as-Discipline

On Friday I went along to the second #BrightonSEO conference. It’s a free SEO conference organised by Kelvin Newman of Site Visibility and despite being a free conference, there was certainly a lot of information packed into a hot and stuffy afternoon. In fact; attendance was such that more than a handful of people had to sit on the floor. Although nobody seemed to mind!

There have already been a number of great round-up posts, and if you are looking for an overview of all the presentations then check out Peter Handley’s run through (as guest) on Holistic Search and also Robin Houghton, at Eggbox Marketing. In addition Paddy Moogan’s overview offers a considered review of many of the presentations, along with a summary take-away tip. I wanted to take a slightly different approach, and reflect on what the presentations (when considered together), tell us about the state of the search marketing industry using key points from the speakers.

It seemed to me that there were two consistent recurrent themes; which were that social media is already firmly on the search agenda and that our marketing activities must be underpinned by process and measurement. Definitely a coming of age event. (more…)
