How to Start Up a Local SEO Meet-Up in Your City

I’ve become a bit of a regular blogger here but most people in the SEO industry know me through the growing BrightonSEO events I’ve been involved in arranging over the last year or so.

We started out with occasional social drinks and we’ve been able to grow to the stage of arranging a couple of half day conferences where we we’ve overwhelmed with the number of attendees.

And the great thing about these events have been that they’re free, opening up search marketing conferences to people who have never attended some of the great, but pricey events that occur all over the UK. (more…)

dmexco 2010 Cologne – Some impressions

Last week, September 15th and 16th I was visiting just another conference – this time a headed out for the dmexco (which is short for “digital marketing exposition & conference”) in beautiful Cologne, Germany. And I thought I’ll just wrap it up for you because – looking at the event from a (German) online marketing perspective – it surely has its place. But let’s start with the facts.

First of – let’s have a quick look on what the dmexco is all about: “The dmexco is the leading international event for the entire digital value chain. Comprising of a combination between an exposition and a conference, a concept that is unique worldwide, it stands for innovative and futureoriented marketing in the midst of a global growth market. […]”. Woho, sounds tempting, doesn’t it?

According to the organizers the expo hall was sold out with 355 national and international exhibitors with an exhibition space measuring 27,000 m². Around 15,800 branch visitors came to the dmexco and a conference program with over 150 speakers from all over the world. But… that’s what the official version is ;) OK, now… Let me throw in some thoughts here: I’m attending the conference since forever, basically I started going when it was still called “OMD” and took place in Düsseldorf, but anyways – even just comparing it to the dmexco in 2009 it doesn’t really “feel” that it got any bigger at all – maybe I’m totally wrong but to me it looked pretty “stuck” and more or less the same. Social Media Readiness Tips for Affiliates

Social Media can be a bit of a difficult space for an affiliate business. An affiliate website acts as a conduit to a merchant website; thus by that very nature much of “the story” belongs to somebody else. It must therefore seem to some that the only opportunity is the following: create multiple profiles – use automated software, or rent-a-fan packages to generate an audience of followers – publish automated messages containing links to your site – get clicks.

If short-term traffic and revenue boosts are your goal, then this may look like success to you. I’m not here to debate the morality of the numbers game or lament “there goes the neighbourhood”. I have no interest in lecturing an audience on the proper way to use a product which does not belong to me. I do however, know through experience that there are more benefits to participating in social media to be had.

At theMediaFlow we help develop affiliate websites into brands. We’ve seen how a true social media strategy brings many rewards and opportunities time and again. Many successful affiliate experts do this well, and generating an identity and buzz to an affiliate business seems to come naturally to them. On the other hand, some affiliate site owners may not feel disposed to social media or may not feel comfortable measuring “guru-touted” conceptual benefits of the conversation. It is not true that social media is difficult to measure, or that returns are less tangible.

Here are just a few of the immediate additional opportunities and benefits social media has delivered for one client… (more…)

Think Visibility – A Love Letter to You

Editorial note: this is the first post by Annabel Hodges on State of Search. We want to welcome her with open arms to our blogging team and are looking forward to her posts in the future. We asked her to give us her thoughts on the Think visibility conference which took place this weekend in the UK.

Dear Think Visibility,

I admit, when I was hauling my sorry carcass to breakfast this morning after having a little too much fun at #drinkvis, I was cursing our love affair and calling you not so flattering names.  Of course, it was all a lie so I am writing to apologise and to tell you and the State of Search community what a wonderful conference you really are.

It was Think Visibility’s fourth outing and my second time heading ‘oop norf’ to partake in the Leeds hospitality, it did not disappoint – Dom ‘The Hodge’ Hodgson and his merry band of associates had ensured it was yet again bigger and better than the last event. (more…)

SES San Francisco 2010: Quick-Summary

The conference went by quickly, way faster than I thought. Arriving on Saturday evening and leaving on Thursday morning is not really that long especially when you fly in from Germany. Unfortunately I do miss SES day 3 because of a speaking engagement on Saturday back in Germany but since I now do have to spend approx. 10 hours in the plane heading over from San Francisco to Frankfurt I think it’s a good time to wrap some things up and just write down some general thoughts on SES SF that I still have in mind. SES San Francisco 2010: How to Become a Link Magnet

All right folks, we’re back with another session at SES 2010 in San Francisco. This time we are talking links and actually “How to Become a Link Magnet”. This should be interesting especially with this great line-up having Aaron Kahlow, Rand Fishkin and Jim Boykin on stage. The session’s description looks promising as well: “Find out from a panel of experts how you can have your (metaphorical) 15 minutes of fame, become a link magnet and dominate search engines.” Oh yea…

First on stage is Jim, he’s going to talk on highly trusted links like those from edu’s, gov’s, etc. He actually divides between link bait magnets vs. trust bait magnets – the differences are: (more…)
