SES Berlin 2010: Duplicate Content Issues

We’re back after the lunch break with another session at SES Berlin – this time covering the various issues around duplicate content. First on is Lutz Ulrich from Google, so let’s see what the “official” version is.

Ulrich starts by showing a DC example on http://www.royal.gov.uk/ (vs. http://www.royal.gov.uk/home.aspx) – so even the British Monarchy seems to have issues – nice! So let’s get on it. Does Google penalize DC? Google says no… if you do it by accident Google doesn’t penalize it! But if you do it on purpose (like doorway pages on various domains or similar) this will get caught and handled “accordingly”. (more…)

SES Berlin 2010: Campaign Management in several countries

This post is written by Thomas Hertkorn of Ads2people who is guest blogging for us on SES Berlin 2010. Keep an eye on his posts!

Speaker Andy Atkins Krüger, CEO WebCertain Group Ltd. moderated by Thomas Bindl from ed Labs.

Hi everyone from my 2nd day at the SES Berlin 2010. I’m at the “campaign management in several countries” session from Andy Atkins Krüger. Hopefully today nobody will kill the micro like Richard Zwicky yesterday.

But now Andy begins with his speech. First he promised an international secret weapon to be successful. Andy said to search and to connect are basic human needs all over the world. To be successful in a single language is easy in Andy’s opinion. But to be successful in many different languages is difficult. (more…)

SES Berlin 2010: SEO Mythbusters

Good morning everyone! Welcome back to another session at SES Berlin 2010. The next session of the day is called “SEO Mythbusters” – and the panel looks pretty awesome: We do have Martin Sinner (Idealo) who will be moderating and as panelists there are Heiko Eckert (bigmouthmedia), Ralph Tegtmeier (fantomaster), Johannes Beus (Sistrix) and Dominik Wojcik (Rocket Internet). Nice!

Not sure, but from what I think (at least this happened last year) everyone of the panelists will share one (or maybe more…) of their favorite SEO myths and afterwards this session will turn into a Q&A. So I’m trying to cover those and some of the interesting questions and of course the answers from the panel. Let’s go! (more…)

SES Berlin 2010: Analytics for PPC

This post is written by Thomas Hertkorn of Ads2people who is guest blogging for us on SES Berlin 2010. Keep an eye on his posts!

Speakers: Richard Zwicky Founder, Enquisite / Eightfold Logic, Metamend; Steffen Methling Key Account Manager bei der etracker GmbH

At the Beginning Richard Zwicky talked about how to extract real value from Analytics.

His first statement was that all Analytics Tools are good for some tasks. But all Analytics Tools claim to be the best. He said in the end only the good interpretation of the Analytics Data is important. It is necessary to give the right information, to the right people. What does the customer really care? Anyone who does Analytics should answer this question.

SES Berlin 2010: Advanced link building 2011

Here we are – back with another session called „Advanced link building 2011” – the panel looks pretty promising featuring speakers like Jan Kutschera, Thomas Gruhle and Christoph Cemper – Stefan Fischerländer will be moderating this one.

One a side note: Why in the world would you do the advanced track in a small room only being able to have seats for just around 100 people?! And for next time: Please do provide tables, at least some. It just sucks to write like this… and yes, power would be really nice a well – besides of a working wifi. Anyways, let’s get this rolling… still waiting for the rests of the panelists to show up…. (more…)

SES Berlin 2010: Advanced PPC Techniques

This post is written by Thomas Hertkorn of Ads2people who is guest blogging for us on SES Berlin 2010. Keep an eye on his posts!

Speakers on this panel were Jan Brockmann Senior Account Manager, metapeople ; Sebastian Reischel Director Client Manager, Blue Summit Media; Lorenz Wacker Managing Director Search & Social Media,j jaron

Moderated by Thomas Bindl

Search Funnels

At the Beginning Jan Brockman shows the individual strength of search funnels. Search Funnels show the path users search. Normally searches going from unspecific terms to specific ones. For example a search starts with “Hotel” and ends up with “Cheap Hotel Barcelona”. If you’re analyzing search funnels you would now increase bids on hotel to be visible. The danger is to bid on generic phrases with a too low cost per conversation value. Search funnels going to be criticized as just another way to get more Budget from your customers. (more…)

SES Berlin 2010: Specific characteristics of the German market

Next session is going to be covering specialties on the German search market. Actually I’m kind of curios to see what the panel comes up with. Speaking about the panel – there are some changes: We do have Stefan Fischerländer and – since Lorenz Wacker is ill and therefore cannot be here – Andy and Richard (who did a great job on the “Search around the world session”) jumped in.

Stefan is mainly going to cover SEO specific topics – good for me – so let’s see what he has to say. He starts with some SEO related numbers for the German market. (more…)

SES Berlin 2010: Search around the world

Hi everyone – welcome to the very first session of the day at SES Berlin 2010. We do have really bad weather in Berlin so it’s a perfect day for a search conference. The venue – the new NH hotel at Berlin Friedrichstrasse – looks promising so far, coffee is all set and I’m ready for some blogging.

First session for me today is called “Search around the world” which is going to be in English – actually it’s the only English panel of the day – with Mike Grehan, Andy Atkins-Krüger and Richard Zwicky. Mike kicks the things off introducing both speakers who are going to cover search marketing on an international level. (more…)

SEOkomm, the first SEO conference in Austria

“A cocktail of business conference (like SES or SMX) and hardcore “underground” SEO event (like SEO Campixx)”, that’s how I would describe the first Austrian SEO conference SEOkomm, which took place last Thursday, the 18th of November. 270 attendees from Austria, Germany and even North-Italy visited the sessions, which were divided in two tracks: a SEO practice track and a business strategy & white hat track.

Marcus “Mediadonis” Tandler started the conference with his “big surprise” session, which turned out to be a session about advanced linkbuilding for affiliates.  Marcus’ message: Don’t focus too much on links with keyword anchor texts. Especially on high traffic money keywords (like loans for example) websites, with brand anchor text backlinks dominate the serps! (more…)

Talking to Mark Zuckerberg

Last week at the Web 2.0 Summit 2010 in San Francisco three incredible big names took the stage: John Batelle and Tim O’Reilly had the chance to sit down for a long talk with Mark Zuckerberg. This resulted in a very very interesting talk. Great stuff for a sunday afternoon.

Talking to Eric Schmidt at Web 2.0 Summit 2010: “But forget search…”

This week John Batelle and Tim O’Reilly had a chance to sit down and talk to a couple of the ‘big names’ in the online industry. One of them was Eric Schmidt. And they had the chance to talk to him for 45 minutes. The full interview was below.

Off course we all were looking for that one weird quote he was bound to be making. At one point it looked it was going to be “But forget search” which he said when they talked about Android, but he quickly added: “In the new world you sort of have to label jokes, that was a joke”. So you pick the quote from this one ;- ).

He even talked about talent and the one guy who got fired over leaking the raise.

SEOktoberfest: the movie

Here’s something perfect to go into the weekend: SEOktoberfest, the movie. An almost 18 minute video by Mike Rübesam about one of the major SEO events in Europe. It will give you an idea of what you are missing out on. One thing is sure: there are no SEO-conference videos with that many women in it…
