SES London: the party is on (Wednesday)

ses-drinks

The first big SES conference of the year and the biggest one in Europe is getting closer and closer: SES London 2011. Which means you will see more and more coverage appearing about that conference right here on State of Search. And remember, you can still win a ticket if you nominate someone or someone nominates YOU for a ticket!

The conference which takes place between the 21st and 25th of February at the Queen Elizabeth II conference centre, in Westminster London, UK will see about 1500 marketers get together to learn about search, social and online marketing strategies. There are many sessions you can attend which are interesting to see, see the program here.

But one of the main reasons you should visit SES is the huge opportunity to network with not only these 1500 marketers, but also to get in touch with the experts in the field. Those who can help you get that step further. And there is no better place to that than in the pub! And that place to be is at the HMS President on the Wednesday 23rd of February. (more…)

Search & Affiliate Conferences – There’s more to them than meets the eye

After State of Search’s recent poll to find our industry’s favourite conference, I wanted to take the opportunity to again highlight the many benefits of attending some of the conferences put on in our industry.

When I started in SEO, I was slightly overwhelmed by the idea of going to a conference – Was it really going to help that much? Can’t I just learn the same lessons from reading on the internet? Is it really worth the price of the ticket? How do I know what best talks to attend are? Is it a practical use of my time?

This is often also reflected by employers if you need to ask them to both allow you the time off work and fork out for the entrance fee. If you work in a non-search focused agency, it can also be difficult to get the purse string holders to understand that yes a search conference is equivalent to a training course for us. (more…)

Interview with Murray Newlands, organizer of Social Media Marketing 2010

murray-newlands

As a blog which does a lot of event coverage we also like to talk to the organizers of the events. One event which is rapidly gaining ground is the Social Media Marketing 2010 event, which takes place in San Francisco and the upcoming one in Las Vegas. Organizer is Murray Newlands, we asked him some questions about himself and the event.

Can you introduce yourself?

I blog at murraynewlands.com. I have been in online marketing since I was 24. I am now 36 so that’s 12 years already. I have been working in the affiliate marketing space for the last 7 years but in the last 2, I started doing more and more in the social media space. My background means I come at social media marketing from the perspective of delivering results, not just what some see as fluff. (more…)

And the winner is…

State of Search is THE conference blog. We cover many events in search and social marketing. Here you can find the very best coverage of many events. That’s why we decided to do a search for the best conference out there. And we asked you, the readers of State of Search to decide.

And you did! But I must admit you didn’t make it easy on me :) . It’s just how you look at it who is the winner. Keep on reading and you’ll see who won… (more…)

What will be the event of the year?

In the past week we have been asking you to tell us how you feel about which conference was the best one of 2010. We’ve had many people fill in the (huge) form, judging the events they’ve attended. Thank you for that! The voting now has officially closed and we are currently in the proces of counting the votes… The winners? They will be announced… well, see for yourself:

How to make friends and influence people in SEO

It seems we have gone conference mad here at State of Search, and with some great conferences about – potential attendees are spoilt for choice – as Bas’ poll would probably suggest. As a conference organiser (I organise the Sascon conference in Manchester UK), I have been on both sides of the fence, as both attendee, speaker and organiser.

One of the things which came out of some recent events within the SEO community are just how many relationships are developed from sources such as Twitter, which then develop onto other social platforms such as Facebook/Skype and often then become ‘real life’ through meeting at conferences whether this be at the conference itself or indirectly via the various social forums which are often associated with these events such as Manchester SEO or London SEO.

So how do you make sure you get ahead in the game of SEO, and make the most of these opportunities …. (more…)

Vote for the best conference of 2010

Last week we asked you to nominate which conference you liked best in 2010. I had first put up a list of conferences and the idea was that based on your comments we could make that list smaller and then vote for the best one. Off course things went a little bit different, I should have known ;) .

In stead of getting less choices we now have more choices because people actually added more conferences to the list. So, now what? Well, I really do want to make a great list of the best conferences of 2010. So we ARE going to vote, but a bit differently than usual. Instead of voting for the one you like most I’d like to know how you rated the conferences. Were they bad? Were they good? Were they excellent? We want to know. So yes, you need to fill in just that little bit more, but then again, we WILL have a great and honest winner when the voting is over!

I’m sorry there are so many options, but I’m going for the honest way :)

Nominate your conference of the year 2010! First nominees are here

It’s December and we’ve decided to end the first official year of State of Search in style. We will be looking back at 2010 and looking forward to 2011 in different ways with guests, posts and elections. Soon we’ll be looking at the best posts of the year on State of Search, but we are doing more! Starting with…

The Conference of the Year 2010

As you know State of Search is the blog to be at when it comes  to coverage of events. And there have been many many conferences out there last year about Search and/or Social. And we are looking for the best one out there. And we want to know from YOU what you think was the best conference of 2010. We’ve nominated several conferences below, but we might have missed a few, so we would like to know from you if you would nominate another show which is not in this list. For now we want to know which four conferences you would nominate, from this list and even ones which are not on the list. Starting next week you’ll be able to vote for the best conference of 2010! Marissa Mayer and Michael Arrington at Le Web 2010

Marissa Mayer and Mike Arrington are making a yearly show out of appearing on stage at Le Web in Paris. Today they were there for the third time.

In other years Marissa didn’t really let much go about what Google was up to, at least nothing really new came out. To be honest, this year was no different. The talk was again very orchestrated and ended with a demo of the new Maps features on Google. Still it’s always interesting to hear Marissa talk.

Here’s the coverage of what came out of the talk: (more…)

SES Berlin 2010: the Search Marketing Toolbox

Last Wednesday I had the honor to speak together with Horst Joepen of Searchmetrics and Thomas Bindl of Refinedlabs in a Search Marketing Toolbox Session at SES Berlin. In this session I covered a few “every day” tools I personally use a lot for different search marketing purposes: keyword research tools, PPC management tools, brand monitoring software, tools for link building, search suites and rank tracking software.

I start with the Google keyword research tools probably everyone knows: the keyword tool, Google Trends and Google Insights for Search. Unfortunately the data you get from Google a lot of times is somehow crippled. I can show you a lot of examples from our Adwords accounts, but luckily enough I found a great example 10 minutes before the session. Just take a look at this graph; a Google Trends comparison on the words SEO, SEM, Suchmaschinenoptimierung and Adwords in Germany: (more…)

SES Berlin 2010: SEO Expert Q&A

Hi everyone – welcome back to the last session of SES Berlin 2010. Wow, time flew by. Can’t believe we’re already having the last session of this year’s SES in Berlin. To finish this SES we do have another Q&A panel talking about everything organic. And again, the setup looks very promising: We do have Marcus Tandler, Johannes Beus, Thomas Promny, Uwe Tippmann and Jens Fauldrath. Moderated, again, by Martin Sinner. Right now we’re still waiting for the attendees to move in, interestingly the room does still look a little empty, would have expect it to be more crowded. But anyways, we do start… (more…)

SES Berlin 2010: Integration of Search Engine Marketing in the Online Marketing Mix

This post is written by Thomas Hertkorn of Ads2people who is guest blogging for us on SES Berlin 2010. Keep an eye on his posts!

Speakers: Marcus Koch, Goldbach Interactive GmbH blue summit
moderated by Thomas Bindl Refined Labs

Here we go again after the break with Marcus Koch speach about the integration of SEM in the Online Marketing Mix. The subject sounds exciting, lets see what happens.

Again the big “last ad tacking” problem will be main subject of this session.

Marcus said it is important for people to be aware of the complete process of a conversion. Not only in the way of search funnels then more in the way of different advertising channels. Everyone should notice that there are correlations between different advertising channels. (more…)
