Social TV: New TV or Another Layer on Traditional TV

second-screen

‘The Second Screen’. It is a term which you have been hearing about a lot more in the past year. The second screen many consider to be the ‘new TV’. It is even going to take the place of TV in the end some say. But is that really the case? Or will it be a bonus, will it just change the way we watch TV instead of replace it?

There might be a lot more going on than most people suspect. This was the topic of the keynote presentation at SES New York 2012 by Mike Proulx, Senior VP and Director Social Media at Hill Holliday and author of the book ‘Social TV‘. He claims there is more to Social TV than you’d think and that it will not replace TV, just enforce it. (more…)

The State of Search & Social – #RIMC13

search-social-rimc-2013

A great intro from Bas at the Reykjavik Internet Marketing Conference to the ‘State of  Search & Social’ track. Ever the historian – Bas states that the first guy that ever got social right was Jesus… then one of his followers unfollowed him…

Starting with the general idea of Search. In times before a great many modern things existed, if you wanted to know something, you would go to the most knowledgeable person in the town and ask them answers – both Search AND Social.

Next came the library where you would climb to the top of the stairs to get to the book you wanted – search.

Over time, we eventually come to the  Search Bar – where we can now can search the entire world.

Search has been around for a long time and will be around for a long time in a different way – the next thing is Google glass – the future of social, the future for search – it’s going to be creepy search – but it’s still search. (more…)

Kristine Schachinger (www.siteswithoutwalls.com) has been a consultant for AOL, Department of Homeland Security, Reba McEntire, Superpages.com, and USA.gov. Kristine shared her expert knowledge about web strategy, and how companies need to lay down foundations first before anything else.

“You don’t want to be the player who goes where the puck is not going – you want to be where the puck is going to be”

Everything in the last year has changed dramatically. A year or two ago someone had not even talked about responsive design

In terms of SEO - Google has changed how the algorithm has changed – as far as TOS  is concerned, and now adds usability, spam and other things – are you watching your website, controlling your website? (more…)

RIMC 2013: Duane Forrester – First Keynote #RIMC13

Keynote 1: Duane Forester – The overlap between social and search

Duane introduces himself as talking about the connection between Search and Social. He has written books such as “How to make money from your blog” and “Turning clicks into customers”. He has been in Search for 12 years and also dabbles in domaining.

In Search, 1 in 4 queries delivers a successful result. 42% of sessions require further refinement. 44% of sessions last more than one day. The key is understanding a “session” in the form of a customer. A query is a single action and a session is a collection of related actions over time. Keyword research is key to session opportunity as a customer may search for one thing on one day, and another related term the next day. Understanding the session lets you understand what that searcher is doing. Are they moving towards the sales funnel? This is the most important thing to focus on. Go into your search logs, find the data, understand what people are consuming and build a view of the reality of what that person is trying to achieve. (more…)
