Osama Bin Laden killed: how did Google and Bing respond?

Osama-intro

Last week I started with a series in which I am looking at the differences between Bing and Google: which one is actually better? After all, Bing seems to be doing well, although there are some doubts about that. I decided to take a look at the both of them based on current events. So “hot stuff” which anyone could be searching on. The question then is: which one of them handles the current affairs the best? Which one offers me the most relevant results and which one is the most user friendly?

Last week the first comparison was made based on the Royal Wedding. There Google seemed to win it based on the quality of the page in general, but Bing did a better job when it came to user friendliness. Today we can already look at another current event which shows differences between the two: this morning news broke that Osama Bin Laden was killed by US Forces. This off course immediately led to many reactions world wide. I took a look at how Google and Bing reacted. This time not with a video, but in text. (more…)

Google or Bing: The Royal Wedding – UPDATE

Since Bing is gaining market share in the US and a little in the UK and we are always complaining that we don’t have the ‘right’ Bing here in Europe I figured it was about time to take a closer look at the differences between the two. So I decided to put up my “user” hat and act as a user searching for current events and compare the two. In the coming weeks I will be trying to compare Google to Bing based on searches related to current events. That way I hope to get a real insight into what the real differences are between the two search engines.  Today I made a video about the differences between Google and Bing when it comes to the Royal Wedding which takes place tomorrow in London. Microsoft ‘s Photosynth team takes another step: Read / Write World

Read-Write-World

Ever since I first saw Blaise Aguera y Arcas present about Photosynth I have been impressed by what Microsoft is doing with the technique. Based on the technique which makes use of images made by you and me and posted for example on Flickr, Microsoft developed several new products like Streetside, StreetSlide imagery and live video in maps.

Microsoft really has some nice material there, yet Google Streetview also remains dominant here. That without a doubt will have something to do with the market share of Bing.

At the Where 2.0 O’Reilly conference Microsoft’s Blaise Aguera y Arcas talked about yet another impressive new feature concerning imagery/mapping connection: the Read / Write World. (more…)

Bing’s European boss Cedric Chambaz: “Search is a very personal experience”

Cedric-Chambaz

It is about time we start to take Bing seriously. They’ve reached a market share of 30% in the US, are the only one growing in the UK and just got out of beta in France. Still many in Europe don’t consider them to be a grown up player in the market. Bing’s intent is to change that.

At the head of EMEA Marketing Lead – SMB Advertising for Microsoft Advertising Cedric Chambaz is working on just that. He spoke at the International Search Summit in Munich and will be speaking at SMX London (on the same panel as me by the way, so I am honored!) in May, which is combined with the London version of ISS. We had the opportunity to ask Cedric some questions about Bing, Europe and more. Find his answers below. (more…)

Bing keeps growing in the US: now 30% marketshare

Bing-stairs

We cannot longer be ignoring Bing as a major competitor in the search market, at least when we are looking at the US that is. According to Hitwise Bing now has over 30% market share there.

In the last month Bing gained almost 2% market share growing from 28.48% in February to 30.01% in March. It’s rival Google lost about the same share and went from 66.69% to 64.42%. Bing’s partner in crime Yahoo also so a rise: Yahoo powered searches went from 14.99% to 15.69%. (more…)

Microsoft files complaint against Google in Europe over YouTube

microsofteu

Microsoft has filed an official complaint against Google with the European watchdogs. Microsoft accuses Google of not allowing competitors, like Bing, to get data from YouTube to rank them in their specific search engines. It also says that Google deliberately is making YouTube videos un-playable on Window Mobile phones and believes Google is discriminating would-be competitors.

Brad Smith, Senior Vice President & General Counsel at Microsoft, explains in a long blogpost why Microsoft is filing. He claims that Google is using a pattern to remain the dominant force in Europe. (more…)

Bing wants to be France’s biggest search engine

bing-arc-de-triomph

We have been waiting for their arrival for a while, but finally the ‘official’ Bing has landed on the mainland in Europe. In France to be exact. And this invasion is supposed to be the upset to a dominance of Bing as the major search engine in France. A huge task for the head of Microsoft France’s Consumer Internet Division, Gregory Salinger.

In an interview with the French newspaper Le Journal du Net Salinger expresses the high ambitions he and Microsoft have in France: they want to be number one. (more…)

Bing gaining share in the US: success rate much higher than Google

Bing-stairs

We keep on asking for a competitor for Google. And all of our eyes are then focussed at Bing. So far in Europe we feel kind of left behind when it comes to Bing, even though they recently started moving towards European mainland by launching in France.

If we however look at the US as an example of what lies ahead we might see some interesting developments in the future. New numbers from Hitwise tell us that in February Google lost some market share, where Bing is gaining. (more…)

Bing html 5 is nearby: Bing Instant part of update

BingHTML5

Winrumors reports that Microsoft is getting ready to launch a special HTML5 version of Bing. This new version is part of the new release of Internet Explorer 9.

In the new Bing there will be lots of room for animation, including an animation which is much like Google Instant. Page elements will be automatically transitioned when typing a search query. (more…)

Why Bing will be trailing on Google and why it should hook up with Apple and Facebook

Windows-7-Mobile-Phone

Bing is doing well, at least, in the US it is. The latest numbers by Comscore show us that Bing increased its share of searches by 1.1 percentage points last month and Statcounter noted that Bing had outgrown Yahoo, but was still trailing on Google.

Bing is not sitting still either, with their expansion to France and new additions to their search results like flight auto suggest and more personalized search options with the extension of the like-data in their search results.

So Bing is doing well, I personally also want them doing well, because I believe we could (especially in Europe) use some more competitiveness. Still, I fear that Bing will be trailing on Google for quite a while and might never even ‘catch’ them. Why? The reason lies in the combination of mobile and personal. Let me explain.

Bing takes first steps on the continent: launches in France: Bonjour!

Bing-France

We have been complaining about it, we have been asking Bing’s director Stefan Weitz: when will Bing finally make the step and go onto the European mainland. Now finally we found a small announcement on the official Microsoft Blog: Bing is now live in France.

“It’s a small step for search but a big step for Bing” One would almost be tempted to use these words when it comes to the steps Microsoft is taking with Bing in Europe. We’ve said many times before: Bing in Europe, except for the UK, is nothing more than Live Search with a Bing logo on it. Now with the move to France the first steps are finally taken. (more…)
