On Thursday Google honours The Brothers Grimm with a little fairytale on the homepage of the search engine that you will probably know. The animated doodle is about the folk tale Little Red Riding Hood or simply Little Red Cap. The story was first published by Charles Perrault but later the Brothers Grimm made a more friendly and positive version of the tale. Main difference that in the version of Perrault in the end the young girl dies, in the version of the two brothers Little Red Cap survives and lives happily ever after
. The story is told by Google in 21 different tiles.
Brothers Grimm
The Brothers Grimm, Jacob and his younger brother Wilhelm Grimm were German academics, linguists, cultural researchers, and authors who together collected folklore. They are among the most well-known storytellers of European folk tales. You can read more about them on Wikipedia. Very well-known collected tales by the brothers are Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel, and Cinderella. These tales were published in Kinder- und Hausmärchen (commonly known as Grimms’ Fairy Tales) for the first time in 1812. Since the first publication there were six other editions, the seventh latest edition of the book consists of 201 tales.

I’m interested in the social commentary of this tale. Not only does Little Red & her grandmother survive (apparently unharmed) but the wolf also survives on the government’s dime… in prison. Strange time we live in.
