How to Pitch to Journalists

geoff-white-channel4-news

We all want attention and coverage from ‘real life media’ because they not only have the most attention themselves (and thus can give you visitors), but also provide the best links. But how to get their attention?

At Brighton SEO last week the technology producer for Channel 4 News Geoff White and discussed this exact topic: what journalists are looking for in a story and how you, or your clients, can work to make journo’s lives easier and get the coverage you’re looking for. Lexi Mills of Dynamo PR then went into the topic of creating successful content and getting the best outreach. Google Keep – Handy Scrapbook or Evernote Contender?

google-keep-header

Google Keep is a new app/tool from Google that appears to be reviving the old Google Notebook, but the ‘buzz‘ appears to be regarding whether Google is taking on ‘Evernote’ and Microsoft ‘One Note’ and whether it has succeeded.

I personally favour the trusty ‘spreadsheet of doom’ combined with calendar reminders for deadlines and work based tasks. However, as a fan of traditional lists, mind maps and calendars to manage things, I thought I would have a look at the (not) much talked about Google Keep and see just how handy it may be as a tool.

I also downloaded the free version of Evernote so I could compare some of the features. This post is not intended as a direct Evernote vs Google Keep post as it is clear that at the moment Evernote is the more powerful tool due to additional note capability and share features. However, similarities suggest that this is a step towards Google moving in on the Productivity Tools space. (more…)

The State of Search & Social – #RIMC13

search-social-rimc-2013

A great intro from Bas at the Reykjavik Internet Marketing Conference to the ‘State of  Search & Social’ track. Ever the historian – Bas states that the first guy that ever got social right was Jesus… then one of his followers unfollowed him…

Starting with the general idea of Search. In times before a great many modern things existed, if you wanted to know something, you would go to the most knowledgeable person in the town and ask them answers – both Search AND Social.

Next came the library where you would climb to the top of the stairs to get to the book you wanted – search.

Over time, we eventually come to the  Search Bar – where we can now can search the entire world.

Search has been around for a long time and will be around for a long time in a different way – the next thing is Google glass – the future of social, the future for search – it’s going to be creepy search – but it’s still search. (more…)

“You don’t want to be the player who goes where the puck is not going – you want to be where the puck is going to be”

Everything in the last year has changed dramatically. A year or two ago someone had not even talked about responsive design

In terms of SEO - Google has changed how the algorithm has changed – as far as TOS  is concerned, and now adds usability, spam and other things – are you watching your website, controlling your website? (more…)

Having your site hacked is one of the most difficult things for a website owner to face. If your site has been compromised you will know that it can take time and effort that you may not have to ‘clean up’.

Help is on it’s way however as Google yesterday launched their Help Center for Hacked Sites. The help centre is a dedicated informational resource and series of step by step instructional videos to help you deal with site insecurities, identify any vulnerability,  fix the problem and go through the review process. The help centre also offers advice on how not to get hacked in the first place. (more…)

Think Visibility Roundup – TV9 – March 2013

think-visibility-9

Another super weekender in Leeds in the form of Think Visibility 9.

Celebrating Birthday #5, this March’s Thinkvis seemed to be held on every floor of the Alea Casino and I seem to have made more friends than ever… which means I also have more incriminating photos than ever :-) (you know who you are).

Without further ado – here is the roundup of the path I chose for the day with additional slides for sessions in the other rooms. (more…)
