SEO Campixx: Conversion on Steroids

seo-campixx-2013-2

One of the best conferences in Germany is definitely SEO Campixx. Where do you find a conference which starts with a great show, an own song and a Star Wars theater play starring Marcus „Mediadonis“ Tandler as Luke Skywalker, Searchmetrics chief Marcus Tober as Yoda and Link Research Tools founder Christoph Cemper as Evil Darth Vader? It’s a different kind of conference with a focus on spirit and networking, but also with 8 (!) parallel tracks on a wide range of different topics. You’ll find sessions about classical SEO themes like linkbuilding, about Panda & Penguin etc. But you’ll also find advanced technical sessions about crawling & scraping, conversion optimization and sessions with titles like “how do I organize my business” or “how to find a good in house SEO for your company?”.

The conference was held last weekend in the suburbs of Berlin. (more…)

How to Keep Control over the New and Improved Exact & Phrase Match in Adwords

full-control

Last month, I spoke alongside Brad Geddes in a panel at the SMX Munich about “Large Scale PPC“. One of the subjects in my presentation was the account structure and how to use your structure to keep control over the account. In the near future after the introduction of  “improved exact and phrase match options” in Adwords, control will be even more important. How can you use this new feature to your benefits and prevent the account from “slipping” out of your hands?

Not nearly 3 years ago, the maximum number of campaigns an advertiser could build in Adwords was 25 campaigns in a standard account and 50 campaigns in an “enhanced” account. Today, we can build 10.000 campaigns in a standard account. Why did Google increase this amount so rapidly? The answer is clear: today we have so many options and settings on a campaign level, that we just have to build more campaigns than we did a few years ago!

Think about the use of mobile and tablets, the changes in the display network, remarketing and especially all the ad extensions that we can use today. In the last months, Google kept on pimping the sitelinks, increasing the number of sitelinks in some cases from 4 till 6 sitelinks and introducing even enhanced sitelinks, which give you the possibility to cover a bigger part of the search result page. SEO Tools of the Trade #seslondon

Yesterday at the PPC tools of the trade session, I was expecting a session with an explanation about some good PPC tools. But the three speakers hat another interpretation of the session. They talked about which features to look for, when you are searching for a good PPC tool. So let’s see what we’ll get today in the SEO tools of the trade session …

Ads in a QualityScore World #seslondon

panel-QualityScore-seslondon-2012

QualityScore is definitely one of the most important metrics in your Adwords account. It decides among others if your ad is eligible to enter the Adwords auction and, if yes. what position it takes. Furthermore this magic number influences the amount you pay for the click. Before starting to cover this session let me give you one quick book tip about QualityScore: “QualityScore in high resolution“, by Craig Danuloff, A must-read for every search marketer!

Searchmetrics Essentials: a Must-have for International Marketers.

Searchmetrics

There are a lot of tools to analyse your competitors’ and your own websites on the market. Most of them focus on the English-speaking countries, some of them on the German-speaking. But for me, for example, it has always been very hard to analyze websites in my home country: the Netherlands. Until recently there wasn’t a decent tool that covered our market. But now there is Searchmetrics Essentials and with just one subscription you can analyze SEO, SEA, Social and Link data in 15 different countries!

High Speed Backlink Profile Analysis with QBL

I’ve always been an enthusiastic user of the Yahoo Site Explorer and its free features. Clearly, its shutdown left a big gap that can’t be filled overnight. So where can I get a quick overview of my existing backlink profile from now? There are a few tools on the market to this: Majestic SEO, Open Site Explorer, Openlinkgraph and the new development of Cemper.com: QBL. The Quick Backlink Tool (QBL) is part of the Link Research Tools and it seems like an affordable alternative to me, especially since Christoph Cemper offered some free accounts for State of Search readers! Reviewing paused ads “feature” on Adwords can hurt honest advertisers

adwords-dissaproved

Today I would like to abuse my position as a State of Search blogger to start a discussion about a new feature Google announced back in September which in my opinion can really hurt an honest advertiser. I’m talking about an e-mail all Adwords advertisers received from Google, saying that they also start actively reviewing paused ads.

In some cases, this can really hurt an advertiser, even though he might be doing everything right. It hit one of my clients last week and after a short and useless discussion with Google support I decided to blog about it. Maybe it will help. (more…)

Geosurf: a proxy service on steroids

Geosurf-Speedtest

Working in Europe for several foreign companies I often need proxies to check local rankings, see how marketing campaigns are appearing in other countries or to check one of our geo-targeted websites.
The problem with these proxies is that most time they are pretty slow and insecure. So when Bas was looking for a volunteer to test a new service called Geosurf, I stepped forward immediately!

Panda – The Quality Bear of Search eats Affiliates

Ralf Schwoebel at A4uexpo

It has already been two weeks since the A4Uexpo in Munich, but I still want to cover the “Panda-session”, because it was one of the best sessions at this conference. Ralf Schwoebel of the downloadportal Tradebit, one of the victims of Panda, started the session explaining what changes he did to get back on track. After that Dixon Jones, Marketing Manager of Majestic SEO, showed the results of some research Majestic SEO did.

A4uexpo 2011: Tackling fraud & compliance in Performance Marketing

targeting

Some affiliate networks are not very keen on giving information about how they avoid fraud. Some people say they are not doing enough to tackle fraud, because indirectly they are also earning money, when affiliates violate guidelines. So I’m pretty excited about the next session, in which Heiko Hildebrandt, Managing Director of Tradetracker in Germany, will talk about how Tradetracker tackles fraud.

A4uexpo: Google Onsite Optimization – Likes and dislikes

Google onsite optimization at A4uexpo

So here we are: the first session of the A4uexpo 2011 in Munich. Sepita Ansari of Catbird Seat. Moderator Alexander Holl introduces Sepita as “a very famous German SEO”. His topic “Google onsite optimization” could be very boring, but as I know Sepita as a good entertainer it will be fun!
