iOS Still Dominates Mobile And Tablet Traffic In UK

internet uk tablet

According to Adobe, 84% of UK traffic via a tablet device went to iOS in February 2013, with 53.5% of UK traffic via mobile phones doing the same.

Tablet and Smartphone internet traffic may favour Android in other countries, but in the UK, Apple still lead the way. According to Adobe, 84% of UK traffic via a tablet device went to iOS in February 2013, with 53.5% of UK traffic via mobile phones doing the same. Of the six countries analysed, Adobe confirmed – unsurprisingly – that iOS and Android completely dominated the market share.

More than 90% of smartphone owners used these operating systems, with iOS the leader in the UK, the US and in France. Blackberry users on the RIM OS accounted for 1.4% of tablet internet traffic in the UK and 4.1 of smartphone traffic – the highest figures recorded out of the countries selected. I’m With Stupid: How The Internet Is Dumbing Down The Next Generation

google

I’m sure that many of us, not least of all those who make a living from it, can conceive of a world without the internet. For Generation Y, it has become the all encompassing font of easily accessible knowledge, entertainment and communication. Our lives have become enriched and transformed because of it and I for one don’t think I’ll ever get over the excitement of actively participating in this extraordinary adventure.

The fact that I don’t have to spend hours in the library, or work out complicated maths equations in my head or wait forever for important letters to arrive any more is still a thing of wonder. Like most of my peers, I tend not to take the internet for granted (not that much anyway) precisely because my generation did go to the library, do maths without a calculator and spent hours writing letters with an actual pen – we grew up learning these skills because there was no other way. You learnt your times table by rote and practised your neat handwriting again and again until you got it right, it’s what we all did. (more…)

YouTube Launches One Channel To All Video Content Creators

onechannel

After a brief testing period, YouTube have finally rolled out their new ‘One Channel’ design update which they promise will provide a more consistent look across all platforms and which should also help channel owners to attract more subscribers. ‘One Channel‘ is the latest YouTube makeover but one which definitely helps regarding the branding and promotion of an individual channel and that’s got to be good for those creating really good quality video assets.

YouTube has enlisted the help of the top content creators on the site to explain what the new design means for them and how they believe it will help all those who upload original videos: (more…)

How To Promote Your Conference Using YouTube

conference-videos-youtube

It’s ‘Event Week‘ here on State of Search and there’s going to be a tonne of information from our bloggers about how to get the best of a conference/industry meet up/convention over the next few days. A lot of the posts are going to be of benefit to attendees (I for one cannot wait to hear some brilliant tips and suggestions) but I’d like to take this opportunity to show how those that are organising the event can use video to promote it, before, during and after. How To Salvage A Dormant YouTube Account

padlock

Taking over a digital marketing campaign is never without certain niggles – but my absolute all time favourite is trying to collate all of the logins and access to social media and other accounts set up in the past. Even the most coordinated strategy can fall foul of the excitement of signing up to the newest shiny tool on the market using some obscure email, especially a personal one. Which often isn’t that much of a problem until that person leaves the company or can’t remember what email was used or a hundred other reasons that make the whole thing more difficult than it should be. In the past year I’ve been asked to revive or access three YouTube accounts that were attracted views and comments but which the company could not login to. The chance to monetize the video content or respond to both positive and negative comments was being lost along with the chance to use the channel for more effective brand building. There are various ways to tackle the situation, so let’s start with the most optimistic option :-) . (more…)

3 Ways To Confirm YouTube Is Actually Working For You

YouTube Playback

After you put the effort in to upload your corporate or client videos to YouTube and optimised/promoted then accordingly, it’s vital that you are able to track and measure how each individual video (plus the channel as a whole) is working for you. Luckily, YouTube provides users with statistical and analytical tools help you measure the reach and engagement of your videos very easily.  Utilising these free tools will provide you with the information you need to understand how your video strategy is working and how it can be further leveraged.

Many people rely on view count stats alone, and while it’s hugely important to know how many people have watched a video, it’s equally important to know how just long viewers watched for and what action they took after. (more…)

The Joy Of Bookmarklets : Shortcuts That Save Time

jquery

I’m a huge, HUGE advocate of anything that saves me time as an SEO and, I’ll be honest, anything that’s a little techy and whizzy makes me happy too. Bookmarklets fit the bill on both counts and have saved me so much time over the years that I wanted to pull as many resources about them as I could together in one place. For anyone unfamiliar with them, bookmarklets are small pieces of javascript code that provide extra functionality to a web page.

They act as a mini browser addon, but without adding the extra strain on your browser that sometime occurs from having to many extensions – win! I think it’s important to note that I don’t come from a development background and don’t really code as part of my day to day marketing activities (but that’s a topic for another day….) so this post won’t be full of how to’s from me, but plenty from other people who know the subject in far greater depth than I ever could. Hosting Or Posting? What Are The Best Options For Video SEO

youtube

Video content can be a hugely effective method of driving sales and traffic for a brand – but where that traffic goes depends on how the video is hosted, optimised, promoted and shared.  Although video is becoming one of the foremost channels for online marketing, there is still a lot of confusion in terms of how it should be used to the best effect, particularly if the aim of the video is lead generation for the client.

There are, effectively, two ways of hosting a video – on page (self hosted) or off page (posted). You can of course do both, or either, or chop and change the method depending on the audience you want to reach or the impact you want the video to have. Both strategies have their advantages and their disadvantages and a cookie cutter approach isn’t always the best way of utilising video so it pays to know the difference. There are going to be times when you need a bigger audience so posting to a site with a significantly wider (and higher) audience may be the approach that’s taken. There are also videos that are dependent on on-page content so self hosting is the only option that gives you the flexibility and control that is required. Below is an overview of both hosting and posting which should give you a quick and easy guide to both. (more…)
