Political SEO – Can it be done?

Obama-on-SEO

Here in the States it’s election season. I recently had a conversation with a campaign worker that said there is “no way” to SEO for a political election. Well my friends, we’re going to spend our day putting together a SEO strategy guide for those with political dreams.

I am going to cover the three most influential search optimization strategies out there for political SEO. The only thing I ask, if you have an idea for something to add – post a comment! (more…)

Social Targeting – Know WHO You Are Looking For!

target-dartbord

This past week I have had the displeasure of hearing a wide variety of social media talk that has me perplexed. Is it not so much that people targeting social media are doing it wrong, or even that they have the wrong intentions. The problem merely is that they don’t understand what social media is, how to interact with it, and how they benefit from it.

I recently walked past a meeting room where a start-up was deciding which route to go with social media. A very boisterious message was delivered fromt he guy who is presumably in charge – “What social media platform are our customers reaching out to us the most?” The answer came, and his closing was “great let’s target that.” (more…)

10 Post Penguin Link Building Tips

Google-penguin

So Penguin has come and gone, and you are still wondering what do I do. You may be unsure where to target your link building efforts, as you are afraid that any links you may build can make your situation worse. I’ll be honest, I had a client see a drop on two of their sites, and while it was not my fault (BAD LINKBUILDER!), it requires immediate attention. So I started at the top, working through our link builders years of work to see just how far off of google’s mark we were. Here are 10 of the maxims for her to use in future link-building efforts, and I hope they are of use to you and your webmaster! (more…)

Meta Description Tags – Billboarding Your Site on SERPS

Billboard-buy-product

So you are now ranking where you want to be, but you simply are not seeing the results that your research tells you to expect. It could be that you suffer from having weak meta description tags. Don’t listen to the “experts” that say it doesn’t matter – let’s billboard your page!

A lot of search marketers now believe that the meta description is meaningless. They say that since because it is not a part of the algorithm in determining rankings that they will shift their focus from it. I ask why, they give reasons, and we both end up feeling unfulfilled from that conversation. So during my drive from Michigan to Florida, I got some motivation for this months article. (more…)

Surviving Venice – Build your Site to Float!

venice-boats

Venice – the lovely, little Italian city by the sea. Gondoliers, singing to you and your beloved as you slowly work your way through a beautiful city. Or is it the lover that just ripped your face off this past week? I think many readers would agree with the later. All apologies to a lovely city, but Google is using its name to wreak havoc on its SERPS!

Google defines Venice as, “Improvements to ranking for local search results. [launch codename “Venice”] This improvement improves the triggering of Local Universal results by relying more on the ranking of our main search results as a signal.” Reading that, you are likely to think that you are in the clear – you rank well in the main index – hell, you may even completely control the SERP. Do not give into a false sense of security! This algorithm change is designed to rock your SEO world. (more…)

Google’s Search Plus Your World – Getting Over The Shock

State of Search - Google+

Ok, we have had a chance to breathe and calm down since our SERPS changed. Google really “messed up” our search results, and made the SERP somewhat ugly. What do we do know? We are Search Engine Optimizers, or as I like to say – Organic Web Strategists.

We have seen change after change occur, both algorithmically and user interface, which affects what we do for clients and their respective campaigns. With this post, we are going to get through it together, both the more pressing matters (how do I get rid of it) and the long-term plan (how do I get my clients conversions from it.) (more…)

Ads As An SEO Factor: Oh No, Do I Have Too Many Ads?

Editors note: this is Bryant Dunivan’s first official post as State of Search blogger. He did a guest post before but will be on as a regular from now on. Welcome Bryant!

With Google’s recent algorithm change, many webmasters will be wondering how it will affect them in both the short and long term. This update sees webpages being judged based on how easy it is for the searcher to find the content that is highlighted on the search engine results page (SERP).

What is most interesting about this update is that it is estimated to play a role in only 1% of searches. We do know two things about Google’s estimates though: 1) They are sometimes wrong, and 2) What starts small can turn into a big portion of your SEO strategy. (more…)
