HTTP Headers now supporting the Canonical Tag: More stuff to watch out for!

mine

Maybe you remember my post on things to look at and make sure how not to get cheated in link-building? Well, that list needs to be extended by a very, very important item: The “newly” introduced Canonical Tag using a HTTP header directive.

But first of all, let’s have a look on what happened: Last Friday there was a post on the official Google Webmaster blog stating the following: “Based on your feedback, we’re happy to announce that Google web search now supports link rel=”canonical” relationships specified in HTTP headers […]”. Ok, so what does it mean? Up to now you had to place the canonical tag within a website’s HTML source code. (more…)

A4U Expo Europe 2011 Preview – Munich Edition

munich-logo3

I’ll be heading out for A4U Expo Europe in a bit and thought it’ll be nice to give a quick overview on this years’ edition. The event will take place in beautiful Munich, again. The Hilton Park Hotel Munich will be the events location and things will kick-off on Monday evening with a first pre-party at the famous Vice Bar in central Munich. It’s gonna be the official networking party and a first chance for delegates to met with speakers, etc. – but also will be the first chance to register for the conference and collect the badge – that’ll save some value-able time on Tuesday. HTML 5 re-visited: What’s in it for SEOs?

html5-display

Mid of 2010 fellow StateOfSearch blogger Louis Venter had first look at the new and upcoming HTML 5 mark-up. Keep in mind that HTML 5 is not ready yet and it’s still a work in progress – officials say we’ll see it finalized by end of 2012 – but I’m pretty sure it’s more going to be 2013 or so. But that’s not the main thing I want to look at. I just thought it might be nice to point out some of the changes that can have an impact in regards to on-page SEO and how developers (and SEOs) currently do use existing elements and tags.

I found it to be extremely interesting, having a technical background, in which direction the usage of HTML 5 is heading. Even though, and I probably should have put this in my summary, I don’t think its ground breaking – but it does make a lot of sense. (more…)

SEO Campixx 2011 – Re-Cap & Interview with Marco Janck

campixx

As you all know the search marketing conference season 2011 kicked off – be it in the UK with SES or in the States with SMX West. Also in Germany we got the first one in 2011: The SEO Campixx. Since I spent the last weekend attending the Campixx which took place at a beautiful lake called “Müggelsee” (close to Berlin) I thought it might be nice doing a little re-cap. And as a bonus I also got the chance to sit down with organizer Marco Janck to get his view on this year’s edition.

First of all let’s have a brief look at the conference itself: Campixx took place the third time in a row (once a year) as a two-day event and this time had around 460 attendees. Since the conference content is and was purely German it’s needless to say the crowd also was – more or less – purely German-speaking. If you compare the Campixx to SMX or SES (in Germany) there are some differences I want to point out: (more…)

Top-3 Performance Optimizations (you should apply right away!)

gwt-performance

Since Google officially introduced page speed as a ranking factor in 2010 I thought I’d put together some of the things we do when optimizing a website for better performance. As a starting point (besides of actually accessing the site and get a feeling on how fast it really is) I’d usually go with the Google Webmaster Tools > Labs > Site performance tab: (more…)

Top-10 SEO Firefox Plug-ins

firefox-add-ons

The other day I had to setup a new laptop and while doing so, obviously one of the installations I did was Firefox which I’m using heavily for some years now. So, the installation finished and I double-clicked the desktop-icon for the first time. Holy… that was fast (almost unbelievable that Firefox boots *that* fast!) but the second thought I had was something like “hmm… why does it look so naked and where are all the useful icons?” and all of a sudden I realized how much I got used to having plug-ins installed to perform the various online marketing tasks day in and day out.

Inspired by the post Top-10 FREE SEO Tools where Sam Murray mainly talks about the most useful tools out there and since I had to re-install and configure my setup anyways I compiled a top-10 list with the most useful SEO plug-ins – here we go: (more…)

SES Berlin 2010: SEO Expert Q&A

Hi everyone – welcome back to the last session of SES Berlin 2010. Wow, time flew by. Can’t believe we’re already having the last session of this year’s SES in Berlin. To finish this SES we do have another Q&A panel talking about everything organic. And again, the setup looks very promising: We do have Marcus Tandler, Johannes Beus, Thomas Promny, Uwe Tippmann and Jens Fauldrath. Moderated, again, by Martin Sinner. Right now we’re still waiting for the attendees to move in, interestingly the room does still look a little empty, would have expect it to be more crowded. But anyways, we do start… (more…)

SES Berlin 2010: Duplicate Content Issues

We’re back after the lunch break with another session at SES Berlin – this time covering the various issues around duplicate content. First on is Lutz Ulrich from Google, so let’s see what the “official” version is.

Ulrich starts by showing a DC example on http://www.royal.gov.uk/ (vs. http://www.royal.gov.uk/home.aspx) – so even the British Monarchy seems to have issues – nice! So let’s get on it. Does Google penalize DC? Google says no… if you do it by accident Google doesn’t penalize it! But if you do it on purpose (like doorway pages on various domains or similar) this will get caught and handled “accordingly”. (more…)

SES Berlin 2010: SEO Mythbusters

Good morning everyone! Welcome back to another session at SES Berlin 2010. The next session of the day is called “SEO Mythbusters” – and the panel looks pretty awesome: We do have Martin Sinner (Idealo) who will be moderating and as panelists there are Heiko Eckert (bigmouthmedia), Ralph Tegtmeier (fantomaster), Johannes Beus (Sistrix) and Dominik Wojcik (Rocket Internet). Nice!

Not sure, but from what I think (at least this happened last year) everyone of the panelists will share one (or maybe more…) of their favorite SEO myths and afterwards this session will turn into a Q&A. So I’m trying to cover those and some of the interesting questions and of course the answers from the panel. Let’s go! (more…)

SES Berlin 2010: Advanced link building 2011

Here we are – back with another session called „Advanced link building 2011” – the panel looks pretty promising featuring speakers like Jan Kutschera, Thomas Gruhle and Christoph Cemper – Stefan Fischerländer will be moderating this one.

One a side note: Why in the world would you do the advanced track in a small room only being able to have seats for just around 100 people?! And for next time: Please do provide tables, at least some. It just sucks to write like this… and yes, power would be really nice a well – besides of a working wifi. Anyways, let’s get this rolling… still waiting for the rests of the panelists to show up…. (more…)

SES Berlin 2010: Specific characteristics of the German market

Next session is going to be covering specialties on the German search market. Actually I’m kind of curios to see what the panel comes up with. Speaking about the panel – there are some changes: We do have Stefan Fischerländer and – since Lorenz Wacker is ill and therefore cannot be here – Andy and Richard (who did a great job on the “Search around the world session”) jumped in.

Stefan is mainly going to cover SEO specific topics – good for me – so let’s see what he has to say. He starts with some SEO related numbers for the German market. (more…)

SES Berlin 2010: Search around the world

Hi everyone – welcome to the very first session of the day at SES Berlin 2010. We do have really bad weather in Berlin so it’s a perfect day for a search conference. The venue – the new NH hotel at Berlin Friedrichstrasse – looks promising so far, coffee is all set and I’m ready for some blogging.

First session for me today is called “Search around the world” which is going to be in English – actually it’s the only English panel of the day – with Mike Grehan, Andy Atkins-Krüger and Richard Zwicky. Mike kicks the things off introducing both speakers who are going to cover search marketing on an international level. (more…)
