Friday Talk: Nathalie Nahai about Web Psychology

Last year at the Conversion Conference she was one of the keynote speakers: Nathalie Nahai. Before the conference we talked to Nathalie about her book Webs of Influence. That is a topic she talks about a lot. And so she did in Lisbon of which you can see the talk below.

Sharing Makes us Feel Good, a Monkey Brain Shows Us

In the past few years Social Media has often been referred to as being a ‘new’ phenomenon, something we need to adapt to. And in a way that is true, but it wasn’t the ‘social’ part of Social Media we needed to adapt to, but the ‘Media’ part: the fact that everything is shared must faster.

The “Social” principles of Social Media have been there forever. I’ve mentioned Jesus in my presentations before (started with 12 followers) as example of how Word of Mouth has been used throughout history and there are more examples to be found of the ‘social’ principles, sharing, caring and showing what we like and looking at others.

The reason we’ve been seeing the ‘social behaviour’ we are showing on Social Media throughout history is simple: it is in our genes. We are social animals. We want (need) to connect, we want to have what others have and we want to get things from other people.

A new research performed by Duke researchers now shows that ‘giving’, or even better ‘sharing, is most probably something that ‘tickles our brain’. They tested it on monkeys… (more…)

Mobile Represents 20% of Facebook Advertising

facebook-mobile

It has taken Facebook a while and it was one of the concerns when the company went to the stock market but it seems they are finally taking steps when it comes to mobile. Not mobile as in a fantastic application (even though that has improved they still have a long way to go there) but there where it matters most for those interested in the money behind Facebook: advertising. The steps are small, but they are there. Still the desktop is still the biggest thing for Facebook.

Global social marketing platform Kenshoo this week reports that after a research they performed looking at more than two million Facebook ad clicks and conversions they conclude that mobile now represents 20.3 percent of overall Facebook ad spend. (more…)

London Underground Turns 150, Google Doodles It

150th_anniversary_of_the_tube-1010005-hp

Many people will as we speak or this morning have been getting on the London Underground again. On their way to work, from work even, or on their way to friends. It seems like the London Underground has been there forever. And that makes sense: today the London celebrates its 150th birthday. And Google decided to honour the underground.

Most people getting on the underground won’t need a map for that, others do. And the map for the London Underground is famous, it has even been used in art. Google now creates another small piece of art: a London Underground Map, mapping the Google logo in their Google Doodle on Google.co.uk. (more…)

Facebook Rolling out New Design for Timeline

facebook-block-logo

It looks like Facebook has started to roll out a new design for the timeline. The Next Web reports that in New Zealand the first new designs have been spotted and ‘our’ people in that region are also seeing the changes appear in their timelines.

The new design is much more focussed on the left hand side column which has been made larger to get more emphasis on it. The right hand side column is made smaller and ‘fixed’. In the header the boxes which showed images have been replaced by cleaner text boxes. It also seems as if there is less personal information been shown right away.

We received some screens from our people ‘down under’, Paddy Moogan and his girlfriend Ellie Williams, who are currently living there and are already seeing the new timeline. (more…)

A Pause on the Newsletter to Create a Better One

play pause

Back when we first started sending out a newsletter we had the idea we wanted to do it properly and create not ‘just’ a newsletter with a feed, but to give you fresh content each month in a nicely formatted way. Content which you would not find on the blog so it was exclusively for those reading the newsletter.

Somewhere along the line we however lost track of where we were going with the newsletter and we ended up just sending the weekly update ones. And although the weekly update can be handy if you are not all the time coming back to the website to read about the latest articles, it is not what we want to broadcast to the world.

So as one of our many New Years Resolutions we decided it was about time to update the newsletter. Make it special again, give you choices on what you want to see in the newsletter and make it special for everyone who reads it. To do that we need some time and although we could just continue to keep sending out the weekly updates we decided not to and pause those to take the time to create a stunning new one. Why? Because we believe we should send you relevant stuff, good stuff. And we think we can do better.

So if you are a subscriber, in the next few weeks you won’t be receiving a newsletter, but do not unsubscribe in the meantime because you will be missing out on some fantastic new ones soon! And if you haven’t subscribed yet, be sure to do so because then you will be certain you will receive our new fully updated newsletter once it is ready. You can sign up below!

In the meantime make sure you follow our Twitterfeed, Facebook Page and / or Google+ Page to make sure you are not missing out on any of the great content (or subscribe to our RSS off course).

But we want to know what YOU want

While creating the new newsletter we are listening to what the readers (that’s you!) want. So we created a small form below for you to give us your input on what you want in a newsletter, that way we can make it perfect for you!

[gravityform id="8" name="What do you want in a newsletter?"]

Signing up?

Don’t want to miss out on that great new newsletter? Make sure you sign up already to not miss our first new updated newsletter!

[gravityform id="1" name="Subscribe to our newsletter"]

Are you a designer?

Finally, are you a designer and do you think you can do a better job and have a cool format for us? Let us know and show us what you’ve got and who knows we might be using your format!

Friday Talk: Eric Schmidt interviews Stephen Colbert

On a ‘normal day’ Stephen Colbert would be the one interviewing Eric Schmidt for his TV show. In this case the roles are turned around: Colbert visits Google as part of the promotion for his book and as part of Google’s ‘Authors at Google’ series, he gets interviewed.

See below the uncut interview of Stephen Colbert’s visit to Google’s New York office.
