Friday Talk: Sergey Brin about Technology, Society, and Business. In 2005…!

Sergey Brin is one of the founders of Google, so we all know. One of the reasons why he is successful is because he knows how to combine different talents: technical, business and social. In the talk below he speaks at the School of Information at UC Berkeley.

Topics include search advertising and auctions, search and privacy, search ranking, internationalization, anti-spam efforts, local search, peer-to-peer search, and search of blogs and online communities. There is one catch: this talk is from 2005. Still, be amazed on how relevant most of it still is!

5 State of Search Bloggers Amongst 50 Most Influential in UK

2013-topuk-onlinemarketing-influencers-blog

We know we have a great blogging team, but it is always good to get recognition from the industry and to hear someone else saying you did a good job. That’s why we were proud to have won the European Searchaward last year and to have bloggers win in specific categories in the UK Searchawards both this and last year and we were proud of Aleyda, winning the poll of European Search Personality on Peter’s blog.

Now we have something else to be proud of: TopRank Online Marketing Blog yesterday published a (constantly changing) list of “Top UK Online Marketing Influencers & Bloggers in 2013“. On that list, next to several people who have guest posted for us in the past, we find no less than five State of Search bloggers!

The five bloggers are Paddy Moogan (ranked 18), Sam Noble (ranked 22), Hannah Smith (ranked 23), James Carson (ranked 38) and Bas van den Beld (ranked 5). The list itself is lead by UK Search Personality of the year Dixon Jones and has some familiar names like Kevin Gibbons, Andrew Betts, Dave Naylor, Rishi Lakhani, Andrew Girdwood and many more on there. The Link Apocolypse

Linkbuilding, does it still matter? Yes off course it does. But is it as important as it used to be? Well no, but you will hear few SEOs who will not put linkbuilding in their top to do’s when it comes to SEO. Yet Linkbuilding and links in general have had a lot coming at it last year, as this infographic describes. (more…)

Facebook rolls out Conversion Measurement for all Advertisers

conversion-tracking-cpm-fb

Facebook is ‘growing’ up and is using the data it has on their users not just for their own purposes anymore, but they are sharing that information, whether it is with Graph Search, or with their advertisers. Yesterday Facebook officially announced that conversion tracking will be rolled out to all advertisers.

Everything off course has its reasons and it seems like Facebook is now really trying to to just be a social network anymore, but it is much more (yes, it was already, it is just speeding that up) taking the route of the advertising network. Yes, just like Google. (more…)

searchmetrics-t-shirt-2

Today in London the UK Searchconference takes place. It is a gathering of winners and judges from the UK Searchawards. One of the winners was Searchmetrics, they won the best tool of 2012 award. Founder of Searchmetrics Marcus Tober came in to talk about their tool and the thoughts behind it. An insightful talk which gave some insights into how Searchmetrics think.

Searchmetrics was already founded in 2007. One of the important things for Searchmetrics is that they have a scalable technology. As like many successful tools they have a strong partner network. (more…)

Facebook Graph Search: Marketing Opportunities and a Potential Privacy Nightmare

Facebook-focus

There it finally was, the news of Facebook launching a search engine. Not the ‘Google Killer’ some expected, or maybe hoped for, but interesting nonetheless, as a search engine within the enormous amount of data that Facebook holds.

It is a database and a feature full of possibilities. But with that it is also a feature full of dangers. Jeroen yesterday already pointed at some very interesting questions that come with the launch of Facebook Graph Search. And to my surprise, he was one of the few.

Most people (bloggers) focus on the what of the new search: what is it, how cool is it. Some look at the why (is it to compete with Google, to get more advertising money). Only a few look at the consequences of the new feature. And based on some testing Dutch Internet Expert Henk van Ess did, these consequences can be big. Really big. (more…)

Facebook Going Into Search, But With Your Friends: Graph Search

graph-search-1-2

There was a lot of rumor in the past few days around the announcement by Facebook today, what would it be: mobile, a phone, is it going into search? Well the answer is clear now: the announcement is indeed about search, Facebook is launching Graph Search. But hold your horses: this is not directly competing against Google just yet, it is about what is already shared with you.

Mark Zuckerberg just announced the new Facebook feature. And also explains how it works: Facebook is about three pillars: the newsfeed, the timeline and finally the graph. Graph search is about searching through that. It can however have a big impact on how people use Facebook. Not searching the web, but searching your interests and see which friends have the same and what they looked at. (more…)
