Google’s Panda Update Rolls Out World Wide

panda in the wild

With a small blogpost Amit Singhal has announced that the much discussed Panda Update is now being rolled out World Wide, with the exception of the Chinese, Japanese, and Korean languages.

The Panda Update stirred up the SEO World quite a bit when it rolled out originally in the US in February and after that in other English-speaking countries. We’ll now have to wait and see how it will affect the other countries. Google itself expects it to impact 6-9% of queries, which is lower than the case was in the US (12%). (more…)

Google GMail Ads Mocked (by Microsoft?)

Back when Google launched GMail and people for the first time saw ads in them everybody was stunned. It was actually the first time that Google got ‘privacy matters’ thrown at them. From that point on the ‘do no evil’ statement was looked at in a different way than before that. Google and Privacy since then never really ‘became friends’.

In this video the ad-functionality within GMail is mocked. In a kind-of-funny way. With the (so it seems) intention to get people away from Gmail onto Office 365. The video seems to be in favor of Microsoft. But if the company is really behind this video? I doubt it…

Be Careful Choosing WordPress Plugins: They Could Kill Your Rankings

buggy-plugins-install

There are many many website owners out there who use WordPress. And rightfully so, it is a great platform. One of the things I personally like, as a non-developer, is that it is open source and others built stuff for me. Usually that means you just grab a plugin which looks cool and does something you always wanted your site to have or do. But in some cases that might not be such a good idea. Because plugins can cause troubles too.

I’ve had plugins instantly take down my sites or slowed them down very much, but it can go a lot further. A Google Webmasterforum thread shows that a plugin could potentially take your site out of Google. A Facebook Like Plugin did that to a site from a forum poster. (more…)

Matt Cutts: there is no limit to direct 301 redirects, there is on chains

Google has done many webmasterhelpvideos, some of which were published also here on State of Search. They now decided to extend these videos more into tutorials. Which simply means thy are longer and go a little bit more in depth :) .

In this video Matt Cutts answers a question of himself: Is there a limit to how many 301 (Permanent) redirects I can do on a site? His answer seems simple: no. But there are some ‘buts’. For example don’t 301 one page too much. Google might not follow all of them.

Statistics on Internet Porn: Still A Major Industry

stats-internet-porn-intro

Even though Experian Hitwise told us Social Media is the fastest growing industry on the web, and that it has outgrown porn, it doesn’t mean that porn is gone. Far from. 12% of websites on the web are still Porn sites. The infographic from Onlinemba below shows just how “big” this industry still is. (more…)

Facebook “Posted About” Feature Potential Page Traffic Booster

Facebook-posted about

When I first saw it I was a bit surprised. At first I thought I had set up some kind of alert. But I didn’t. Then I thought it must have been something which was there before, but I just hadn’t noticed it. It wasn’t, it is brand new.

Facebook has released a new feature which I personally feel is a smart move and a nice one, something worth competing with Google Plus. And something which can drive traffic. Facebook now shows you links to a Facebook Page when multiple friends post updates have mentioned that specific page. At the same time we are going to see some changes to the like button. (more…)

The Keywords On Which Google Makes Its Fortune

The Top 20 Most Expensive Keywords in Google AdWords Advertising

Google’s business model used to be only Adwords. And it still is their main source of income. They make a fortune out of the keywords we type into Google. A very smart business model. But which keywords are the ones making Google the most money? This infographic from Wordstream shows us where Google is making the most money. (more…)

Google Makes Surprising Book Deal with French Publisher Hachette

Google-Editions

To be really honest, I kind of figured that the Google Book project to digitize the books world wide would die a slow death after Google saw a settlement on the topic declined in the US last year. But now all of a sudden its back. With a deal in a country where Google had a lot of troubles with the book project before: France.

The book project has been under fire ever since Google first started to work on it. Google was seen as the evil company trying to steal away the content from publishers and authors, resulting in several lawsuits world wide. (more…)

Google’s ‘Cool Kids’ Matt Cutts, Ben Gomes, and Amit Singhal Talk in Public

During my holiday I was reading the book “In the Plex” by Steven Levy. You really feel you are getting an inside into the Google offices when you read that book (I will review it later). In the book Levy mentiones the office of Matt Cutts, Ben Gomes, and Amit Singhal as being an office which by Googlers is called the “cool kids’ office”. Now to be honest, if you would tell that to somebody outside of the industry and show that person a picture of the three, they probably wouldn’t believe it. But online, Search and Google in particular is a world of its own. Here the ‘cool kids’ are those who know the most.

The Churchill Club, a Silicon Valley business and technology forum, got the three to talk their stuff not in the offices at Google, but on stage. Moderated by Danny Sullivan they talked for almost 1,5 hours about a lot of ‘cool’ stuff. If you have the time, you should really watch this.
