Conference season has started again. If you are an eager (search) marketer wanting to learn stuff you can really make some steps in the next few months with lots of conferences around. Off course State of Search will be present. Sometimes speaking, sometimes blogging.

Mid-September we will be at SMX Stockholm where no less than three bloggers are speaking. A week before that however is SMX New York. We will try to get coverage from there too. Leading up to SMX East we are already looking forward to this conference. We talked to organizer, editor in chief of Searchengineland, and probably the most famous person in search next to Matt Cutts, Danny Sullivan about the show and his view on the current developments in search. Danny talks about his job as an organizer, what we can expect from the show and also gives us an insight into his thoughts about the changing industry. (more…)

Google Confirms Tests with Infinite Scrolling

Oh don’t we all love the fact that Google’s testing efforts have become much more visible to all of us? I was talking to co-blogger Jeroen van Eck about it yesterday, is Google doing a lot more testing, are the tests more visible than before or do we just report on them a lot more? Probably it is a combination. Now Google also starts to confirm tests, like in this case the tests with the infinite scrolling.

We have seen them before: tests with infinite scrolling Google results. No more pagination, no more being on page two, three or even 99 or more. All of us on one page: scrolling down will load the next ten links and so forth. (more…)

8 things linkbuilders shouldn’t do when asking for links

Linkbuilding, we all know its one of the, maybe even the, biggest factors in SEO. Get enough quality links to your website and you will automatically start ranking. Well, almost. There are a lot more factors to consider off course. But fact is that links matter. A lot. And thats why the art of linkbuilding exists. And its truly an art I would say. Especially if you look at those who can’t do it.

Getting links can be done in many ways. The best way (writing good content) takes up a lot of time. Therefore people tent to aim for the less time consuming efforts. And the best way to do that? Just ask! But come on people, if you ask for links, please think before you pop the question.

As a site owner we will probably all be getting link (exchange) requests. As an owner of sites like State of Search and in the past Searchcowboys I might be getting even a few more. And to be honest, most of them are worthless crap requests. I thought I would share some with you. In this post you will see how you know you will NOT be getting that link. State of Search radioshow – episode 65: The Bing – Yahoo transition with Cedric Chambaz

Bas and Roy were joined by Microsoft’s EMEA Marketing lead Cedric Chambaz. Cedric discussed the Bing – Yahoo transition in which the ‘backend’ of Bing and Yahoo is merged, making that you will find the same results on both websites. Cedric explained what they had done and also explained the difference between the transition and the updates to Bing. A must listen to really learn the insights on the transition.

After Cedric left Bas and Roy discussed some of the current developments with Google buying Motorola, patents and Google and Amazon as the main topics.

Panda Update Europe: More details on Germany and French Winners and Losers

Searchmetrics earlier this week responded quickly to the latest move from Google in their algorithm updates. The Panda Update which was rolled out World Wide and thus in Europe last week saw winners and losers in the different countries.

We already saw the list of Germany earlier this week, now Searchmetrics has released the list of winners and losers in France and is giving us more details on the winners and losers in Germany. It turns out that if you lose, you lose big and if you win, you only win a little. According to Searchmetrics visibility can go down to almost 99%, but winning only means a few percentages gain. Optimising or optimizing for videos on YouTube: Greg Jarboe explains

The International Search Summit is a conference which has a focus which you don’t find on many conferences: international, the title already says it. Its amazing how little this subject is addressed on the larger conferences. It made Andy Atkins Kruger, an international search expert, start his own conference.

On the day there were many good speakers addressing all different topics. In the morning we saw Steve Capone of Nokia addressing the different international challenges Nokia faces, followed by a great presentation from Mark Neal from Armagard. The second part of the day saw speakers Anne Kennedy, replacing Shari Turow about Website Usability and Gillian Muessig about search in India.

The one presentation I’d like to highlight here is the presentation by Greg Jarboe. After Bruce Daisley of YouTube opened the afternoon with an overview of YouTubes growth Greg talked about video optimization, a growing profession with the growing number of videos online.

A Speakers View on SES San Francisco: Li Evans (@storyspinner) reports

This week in San Francisco it is SES San Francisco, the major online marketing event in San Francisco when it comes to search and social. Unfortunately we couldn’t be there ourselves this year to report on the conference like we did last year. However, we are doing something very special.

Our good friend Li Evans, author of the book Social Media Marketing (reviewed here), is speaking at the conference and is doing training sessions for attendees. Google Officially Announces New Expanded 12-pack of Sitelinks

People have been seeing tests (really!) from this for the past few weeks, but Google has now made it official: there is a new way of showing sitelinks, and not just that: instead of the ‘old’ 8 links, we now get 12 sitelinks.

The change was announced on the Google Blog where they showed the evolution of sitelinks: from a single row to a set of 8 links, to 12 sitelinks with descriptions. The sitelinks now look a lot more like ‘regular’ links. (more…)

How well does Google Translate really work?

Google Translate can be a handy tool. But to be honest, a lot of the times the translations you get back can be really really crappy. But it is getting better, that is true. Still in my opinion Google Translate is there for the quick interpretation, knowing what something is about, not for the actual translations itself. If you optimize a website do not use Google Translate to translate a story and put that on your site. You will not get the right text, I can assure you that.

Still, this video below shows a nice way of how Google Translate can work. And apparently it does work for ordering Indian food! Then again, I can’t really check, because I don’t speak Indian. Still, its a nice video :) .
