Matt Cutts Explains “Google Trust”

Google uses many signals in ranking. Sometimes the rankingfactor “trust” is mentioned. But what is meant by that? Matt Cutts decided to explain. There is no ‘trustrank’, but they are looking at how believable the reputation of a page is. Google uses a lot of different words for that.

Majestic opens Fresh Index for Free Users

majestic-registered

Six months ago keyword research tool Majestic SEO announced they were “now able to find fresh back links within 24 hours“. That meant they were speeding up things.

Since than a lot has changed and Majestic has become even faster. That results in the announcement by Majestic that they are letting ALL users get full link data for their own sites from Majestics Fresh Index. Until now non-paying users could only get reports for their own sites from the historic index. (more…)

BBC Documentary Mark Zuckerberg: Inside Facebook

Mark-Zuckerberg-Facebook

This Sunday the BBC broadcasted a documentary about Facebook. In this one hour long documentary Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg talked about his product and gave us some insights into his world. The documentary however by some was seen as more of an advertisement for Facebook than a real documentary. This was caused by the way BBC presenter Emily Maitlis was ‘all over Zuckerberg’.

You can be the judge yourself. Mark Zuckerberg himself posted the entire documentary online, on YouTube, so it is now available for everybody to watch, even if you are not in the UK. You can see it below. Do not hesitate to give us your opinion. (more…)

Google Killed The Long Tail

Are they right? (more…)

Google About to Get Slapped by the EU

google-EU-trust

The year is almost over and the new year is approaching rapidly. That new year, 2012, might not start off as well for Google as hoped. Google can expect a more than 400 pages counting document from the European Commission (EC) with objections and allegations of abuse of dominance.

Based on a complaint which goes a few years back from search engines Foundem, eJustice and Ciao!, the EU started investigating Google about a month ago. Their complaints now apparently have lead to a document of accusations against Google.

Google knows the accusations are serious because Eric Schmidt has been sent out to travel to Europe to pay a “courtesy visit” to the European Commissioner Almunia this week. (more…)

Another ten of Google’s Search Quality Changes

change_w-300

Google has decided it wants to share more often the changes it makes to improve the search quality of their SERPS, which means algorithms and SERPS. Last month we already mentioned several changes. Google now feels we should be updated each month. That’s why they will be giving a monthly update on their blog.

This month they again made clear they have improved their search. Another ten changes, some more important than others. The most important ones? More autocomplete predictions, fresher and more complete blog search results and original content. (more…)

Integration Series: Get Ready For Part II!

SOS-Integrationseries-oval

Last week we started something very special: a guest post series of one post each day by somebody either in the search industry or outside of the search industry. But not just any kind of guest post. All the guest posts have one overlap: the topic is set on “Integration”.

Integration of all different marketing channels is necessary to take that next step. We have to stop seeing “search” or “social” as separate entities and make them part of the entire marketing strategy. And that is what our guest posters are talking about!

So far we have seen some magnificent posts appear on the site. Bryan Eisenberg yesterday took Steve Jobs as an example of how Marketing integration can be done, while Kate Morris the day before looked at Journalism. The series last week was opened by Julie Joyce who took her own profession, linkbuilding, as a starting point. Sam Noble also took her profession of brand management as starting point with a look at the impact of Social on Search, while Sara Andersson before her looked at something which everybody should be looking at: user intent.

Now it is time to introduce to you the next group of guestposters who will be writing on State of Search in the next period! Again some fine fine names!
