Friday Talk: Jeremiah Owyang About Social Media And Big Business

With 2012 just starting its interesting to see if predictions for 2011 came through or not. At LeWeb 2010, just before the end of the year, Jeremiah Owyang talked about trends for 2011.

He talked about “Social Media And Big Business” in 2011. Was he right? What do you think?

Marcus Tober: “Users evolve with the Search Engines”

In less than two weeks the European Search World will gather in London to attend, network and share knowledge at SES London 2012. Like every year it promises to be a great event with a great line up of speakers. State of Search will off course be covering the event and in cooperation with our friends at SEO Chicks there was the contest to win tickets.

Going up to the conference we will also be shedding our light on the event. We have asked several speakers at the event to answer some questions. Questions about SES off course, but also about the market in general: where do they feel the market is heading.

Today we listen to Marcus Tober, CTO of SearchMetrics. (more…)

A Little Bit of Bing, in Numbers

BING-Infographic-intro

Last week Freshegg had a #BingFriday. On this day they specifically looked at Bing and they specifically asked people to use Bing. I thought that was a very nice and smart idea. Bing can use the attention with all the talk about Google.

We already saw the questions they asked Bing’s director Stefan Weitz yesterday. One of the other things they posted was this infographic about Bing. A little bit of Bing, in numbers. (more…)

Searchmetrics Dashboard To Give You Quick Insights in Search Visibility

Searchmetrics-Essentials

The world of tools is going like crazy at the moment. And for a reason. Tools after all can give you insights which can help you build your brand or product. Our good friend Andy Betts wrote a great piece on that yesterday over at Searchenginewatch.

They are launching an online dashboard for its Searchmetrics Essentials software with complimentary search and social metrics to anyone. Without an account you can now get information on organic and paid search visibility and visibility on Social Networks. (more…)

Five Questions For Bing’s Stefan Weitz

QA-Stefan-Weitz

Last week Freshegg decided to provide us with some attention for Bing. They posted about Bing, made infographics and did a lot more. The idea was to “encourage people to break the Google habit and use Bing on Fridays instead.”: BingFriday.

A very nice initiative from Freshegg and much needed in these days when most of the talk is about Google (yes, we are guilty of that too). One thing Freshegg did was do a Q&A with Bing’s Stefan Weitz. (more…)

Updated: Has Google Let Something Slip Past Their Guidelines?

Page-Brin-Chocolate-Bars

Brands are still struggling to get a grip on Google+. They know they “have to be there” in order to continue playing a role in social in the future. But who is there now? Is it, to quote a Googler last week in The Netherlands, “just the SEOs” like many SEOs claim? Or only “photographers” as many from that specific area say there are? Fact is that Google+ still needs to find some ground when it comes to usage.

But that you will have to use Google+ one way or another is now accepted. But how? Many brands decide to do the same they did on Facebook: be there, be funny and interesting and get as many ‘followers’ as possible.

One of the brands which is very active is the English brand Cadbury, chocolate maker and as they say themselves the “Official Treat Provider to the London 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games”. Cadbury decided to get as many people to put them in their circles. But it looks like they might have slipped through Google’s mazes doing that. (more…)

Should You Build a Website? And If So, How?

build-site-and-how-intro

Last year in a panel I got the question whether or not in five years ‘websites’ would disappear and everybody would be using Social Media pages. I thought that would not happen. Another panelist disagreed and I still think websites matter.

You do have to think well about your website: what purpose do you want it to have. Why do you need it. And off course after that comes the question: but how? This infographic looks at all these elements. (more…)

Great Articles You Missed Last Weeks in Search and Social – February 7

ipad-reading

A few months ago we started a series of weekly posts to help you figure out what you should be reading on the web. What did you miss? We at State of Search read a lot so we figured we would share that with you.

To keep up you can off course register for our newsletter and our RSS Feed or follow us on Twitter or Facebook.

The series died a silent death, simply because it took too much time for one person to collect it all. But now the series is back. And with full force. This time the content is provided not by one blogger, but by our entire blogging team. This means you will get only the best! This time you will get the posts on the Tuesday, starting next week we will probably move it to the Friday to give you a ‘weekend reading list’. If you have any tips: tweet us! Enjoy! (more…)

How To Spot Fake and Real Profiles on Facebook

facebook-fake-real-intro

The web is open and free. Which means everybody can be who they want. Or you might also say: anybody can create who they want. The web has many fake profiles. Something Google for example tries to prevent from happening at Google+ with their real name policy.

Whether that will work remains to be seen. In the mean time other social networks like Twitter and Facebook are filled with fake accounts. We’ve talked about how to recognize Twitter bots before. This time we look at Facebook and we get help from Barracudalabs who produced a great inforgraphic telling us what to look out for when trying to spot Facebook fake profiles. (more…)
