UPDATE: Official: Yahoo To Lay Off 2,000 and Being Sued: A Facebook SetUp?

Yahoo-employee-entrance-Yahoo-About-To-Lay-Off-2000

Update: Yahoo now officially announced it will indeed be laying off 2,000 people.

According to Kara Swisher of AllThingsD, who is usually very well informed, this week could be a week of major changes for Yahoo. One of the older search brands in the industry is supposedly making a lot of changes, starting with about 2,000 lay offs in the next few days.

Is this the end of Yahoo as we know it? Will the company be restructured or will there be a maybe surprising other move, like a sale? At the same time as Yahoo is having its own issues they are being sued as a counter reaction by their partners Facebook over patents. To say that Yahoo is in rough waters in an understatement.

A few years ago Yahoo was the center of attention when both Google and Microsoft tried to buy the former search giant. This ended not with a sale but with a partner deal with Microsoft. This deal was made by the Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz who has always been a source for news, because there was always something going on.

With her departure things seemed to have calmed down, but behind the scenes her CEO successor Scott Thompson is as busy or busier than Bartz restructuring the company. According to AllthingsD this will result in 2,000 lay offs this week. And that is just the start. (more…)

Taking Your Kids to Work: Fun At Google in 1999

Google-99

Taking your kids to work is something special. Taking your kids to your work if your work is Google is something else.

Everybody knows the ‘reputation’ of the Google Plex. Working there is a treat. Whether or not that has become better or worse over the last decade is a different discussion, but back in 1999 it sure looked like a treat.

In this video an ex-Googler has taken his kids, back in 1999, to his work, which then was Google. He just started working there and took his kids to the office when nobody was there. It definitely is ‘just’ a home video, but it does give a little bit of insight into the ‘fun part’ of working for Google back in 1999.

Too bad the video is not embeddable on the site but we didn’t want to withhold it from you. Watch it here.

The Difference In Users Between Google+ and Facebook

facebook-gplus-diff-intro

Google’s TV Ad in the UK was launched this weekend. It was clearly aimed at getting more users for Google+. But as someone stated in the comments of our Facebook page, who was it targeted at? Young or old users? And wouldn’t people who see it think “hey that’s Facebook?”. But Facebook and Google+ have different type of users.

For those who don’t know the difference between the users, students from the Fox School of Business made this infographic to explain the difference. (more…)

Google’s First Ever UK TV Ad: How Was It For You?

Google+-Tom

In the US it is a more common sight: Google doing a TV ad. In 2011 Google even spent $70m on this kind of brand advertising. In Europe and in this case especially the UK however it is not that common that Google uses this way of getting attention.

This weekend however for the first time in their short history Google launched a TV ad in the UK. The ad was called “‘Google+: Tom” and is a commercial to promote Google+. The ad follows the Tom, an average Joe, through his life and how he shares that life in many stages on Google+. It has Benedict Cumberbatch reading ‘The Seven Ages of Man’ from Shakespeare.

The ad was written by Aidan McLure, Laurent Simon, Beth Bentley and Alex Heisz. It was directed by Simon Ellis of Mad Cow films. You can see it below. (more…)

Who Says Facebook Is Not A Sales Tool? 40% Of Small Businesses Use It That Way

facebook-commerce

Social Media is not regarded as a sales tool. Most people will tell you not to expect too much of it if you want to use Social Media that way. After all, Social Media is a platform which will help gain you visibility, not sales. Right?

You might think that, but as it turns out it could be a very useful sales tool after all. At least, that is what 37% of small businesses say when asked about Facebook sales. They state that Facebook Commerce is their sole sales channel.

The respondents were all customers of social commerce platform provider Payvment, who performed this research last month. They were asked about how they use Facebook and how they liked it. Some results were interesting. (more…)

Google Algorithm Changes in One View

Google-Algorithm-Changes-intro

Google makes constant changes, over 500 a year. Not all of them are algorithmic (thank heaven), but some of the major ones are. It can be difficult keeping track of all of them. Here however is another overview of all the big algorithmic changes Google has made in the past 14 years.

We have seen similar overviews, but the overview that Outrider has made of the Google Algorithm Changes since the start of Google in 1998 until now is the best so far. (more…)

Google Account activity: Google Showing You How Much They Know From You?

Account-Activity-Opt-in

One of the major subjects these days is privacy. With everything being tied together, behavioral targeting being at its peak and Google and Facebook playing with their policies, many are focussed on whether or not our privacy is secured.

Google plays on this by using what they know into their benefits, making us feel we are secure. One of these measurements for example was SSL Search, which is terrible for marketers, but really works for the ‘feeling of security’ people have, even though it hasn’t helped their security for one bit.

Yesterday Google announced a new ‘feature’ which can be seen in the light of ‘showing they are open’. Google now gives you “Google Account activity”: an extra option where you can see what you have done, and what Google stores from that. (more…)
