Are We Sharing Too Much on Social Media?

It’s been said to me before and probably to many of our readers as well: ‘aren’t you sharing too much on Social Media?’. Maybe, maybe not. I know that I am very aware of what I post and don’t post. But maybe not everyone is. And maybe some should be more aware of what they post?

Today Eric Sykes died. For many outside of the UK that won’t mean a lot. For those in the UK it means that an illustrious figure passed away. As always events like this however also tell us a lot about the world we live in.

The online world now gives us instant insights in how we respond to events like this. It shows how engaged we are or not and it also shows how quickly some online players can respond. We saw for example that Google’s newest feature, direct answers, is not as quickly up to date as some others are. (more…)

Settings-chrome

Having issues with searching through your Chrome browser? You’re not alone. The browser seems to be playing up.

One of the reasons browsers became important for search engines was the new found option to search from the URL bar. Just start typing, hit enter and the search engine you’ve set as your default search engine will show the results. Handy.

Ever since a few years Google has got Chrome as their own browser. Next to the URL function Chrome gives Google a lot of information on the searcher. Many people using Chrome however use it because of the speed: it is a fast browser. A lot of people using Chrome have been having issues using the search through URL bar functionality. They are getting a blank page after a search. (more…)

There are how ever many experts who can really make a difference in ads, just take a look at Evert‘s post “How to Keep Control over the New and Improved Exact & Phrase Match in Adwords” recently.

One thing which is hard to understand for some is how to actually look at the traffic you are getting from advertising: how are they different and how can you make best use of them? On the Ad Traffic Quality Resource Center Google tries to help their customers with just that. Last week they launched the video you can see below on that topic.

We are interested to know what you take out of videos like this. Is it useful?

Bing Let’s You ‘Dissavow’ Links

no-links

Bing has launched a new feature in their Bing Webmaster Tools which allows you to ‘disallow’ links pointing at your site. You can now say you don’t want to be associated with a certain link and the ‘value’ of that link will not be counted in Bing’s algorithm.

The feature is something which can prevent negative SEO efforts, people buying links and pointing them at your site for example, but it is also useful for ‘cleaning up your act’ if you have foul links. It might also be a help stop those e-mailing other sites to take down links, threatening with legal actions. It sure is a feature which many people would love to see on Google as well. (more…)

Searching in Different Countries Without Proxies

ISearchFrom

As someone living in the Netherlands and as someone who is keeping a close eye on what is changing in the industry and with the search engines I have one big problem: localized search. Google tends to localize your search results based on where you are, which means for me in the Netherlands it is quite difficult to see how State of Search is doing in for example Australia or even closer, Spain or France.

There are tools working on solutions for this problem, because for SEOs who work internationally it is difficult to see where you rank. One tool which looks at just this issue is “I Search From“. Here you can see what results you get from a query in any country in the world, in any language you choose. (more…)

You are hearing these remarks more and more often, and if you look around you, you will indeed see many people staring at their phones. But is it true? Is Social Media really making us less social? What do you think? (more…)
