State-of-Search-my-moment-2012

The end of 2012 is approaching (if the world doesn’t end today that is). Here on State of Search we try to listen to what other people think and we like to let our friends talk. And our friends have had quite the year!

Going up to the New Year we will tell you what the best moments of our friends were and around the New Year we will show you what they wished for. Towards the end you will hear from our bloggers.

Today it is time for the third group! Read the moments of Dixon Jones, Kevin Gibbons, Fili Wiese and Richard Gregory (more…)

doodle-maya-calendar-2012

It’s on everyones mind: the world might end tomorrow (December 21st). That is if you believe the myth of the Maya Calendar who predicted a ‘new beginning’ on December 21st 2012.

Now there are many reasons to doubt this theory and many will ignore it, but it is a topic which is going around a lot on Social Media at the moment. (more…)

Matt Cutts about Negative SEO: Use the Disavow Tool

Negative SEO, ranking your competitors for ‘bad’ keywords or for example badmouthing competitors or trying to give your site ‘bad links’ so you are less visible to Google, has been talked about a lot in the past few years. With Google’s disavow tool that Google recently launched fighting against negative SEO became easier. Matt Cutts explains that in his latest Webmastertools video. About Negative SEO.

My Moment of 2012: Yoast, Mel Carson, Jonathan Allen and Barry Schwartz

State-of-Search-my-moment-2012

The end of 2012 is approaching rapidly, and yes, you are seeing ‘predictions for 2013′ or ‘what happened in 2012′ posts probably pop up everywhere. Here on State of Search we try and do things differently, but to be honest we also like to listen to what other people think and we like to let our friends talk.

So this year we went for another approach: we asked our friends and bloggers what their moment for 2012 was and what their wishes for 2013 are. Going up to the New Year we will tell you what the best moments of our friends were and around the New Year we will show you what they wished for. Not all at once, we have too many friends ;-) , but in groups. Towards the end you will hear from our bloggers.

Today it is time for the first group! In this group some big names from within the industry: WordPress SEO celeb Joost de Valk (for some better known as “Yoast”), former Microsoft hero, now author and Self Employed Mel Carson, The Director of Searchenginewatch Jonathan Allen and the editor at Searchengineland and Founder at SEROundtable Barry Schwartz tell us what they’re best moments for 2012 were. Enjoy! (more…)

Facebook Nearby: Facebook’s Local Search, Opportunity for Offers

Nearby-featured-2

In the past few years many have discussed the possibility of Facebook going into search. After all, the Social giant has got an enormous user base and has the knowledge of who and what you like so it would be interesting to see if they could give you the right ‘answers’ on your searches.

Many have said that Facebook and search would not work, either because search is ‘a whole different ballgame’ or that people don’t go to Facebook to search, but to interact with their friends. On top of that Facebook has a deal with Bing so the ‘need’ to do search isn’t as big.

But like Google changes, so does Facebook and wherever there lies opportunity they will not hesitate to grab opportunity, as long as it is connected to what the ‘business’ does. And so now we see Facebook getting into “search”, but not as a ‘regular’ search engine, but closely related to that what they were already doing: local search, recommended by friends. And with that it is opening up another channel for their Facebook Offers. (more…)

The Biggest Surprise for Matt Cutts and his Team? Falling for Scam

The year is closing and that means people are looking back on the year. As does the Google Webspam Team. In his latest webmastertools video Matt Cutts answers a question about 2012: What has been the biggest surprise of 2012 for you and your spam team?

The answer? Falling for scam:

Some Google Fun on Google+

obama-joking

Google gives us a lot of headaches when it comes to business, but through the years they have also given us a lot of things to smile or even laugh about. April fools jokes, Easter Eggs, you name it.

Since the end of the year is approaching we figured it would be fun to look back at some fun things Google did in the past like those Easter Eggs and April fools jokes. Every day until the end of the year we will share one on our Google+ page. On this page we will collect them all. All jokes are collected by our specialist on this area: Michel Wester. (more…)

How can I make the pages on my site unique?

Once in a while we post a video of Matt Cutts answering a question from a webmaster. Most of the time it is because the question or the answer is remarkable. In this case it is a remarkable question, one where even Matt Cutts has to groan about…
