As every week we bring you news on State of Search. We recorded this for you on Monday but have been struggling with the quality of the video ever since. Therefore this week we are posting the update in podcast format only. And we hope to get a grip on the settings of Camtasia next week ; ). As a special treat you are getting the entire transcript in the post this one time.

This week in episode seven we look at Google putting brand logos in maps, Sphinn, streaming search, Google indexing SVG, Google trims privacy policies and much more. (more…)

State of Search radioshow – episode 25: Thinkvisibility, The death of Sphinn, LDA and What’s Google up to

Bas and Roy were joined by Peter Young this week to talk about some of the topics which were in the news over the past week. Peter visited Thinkvisibility and talked us through the event. After that the discussion went to Sphinn, which announced it would be leaving their voting system. Was Sphinn useful or not?

After the break several topics were discussed. Roy and Peter argued the tool SEOMoz launched on LDA was a ‘fail’ and it was discussed what Google might be announcing. At the end Bas explained his new role of Social Marketing Ambassador.

The shownotes are below. (more…)

A summer interview with… Chris Sherman: “I still firmly believe that we’re just getting started”

All summer we have been interviewing experts in the industry about their thoughts on the search market, what hot topics there are and more. We’ve seen interviews with the likes of Joost de Valk, Marcus Tandler, Fantomaster, Mike Grehan and Danny Sullivan, and off course our bloggers. It has been a great series. In the near future I will be posting some findings from the different interviews. But we still ‘owe’ you one interview, which has been published in our newsletter, but not yet on the web: Chris Sherman, Executive Editor of Search Engine Land. (more…)

Defending Google or stepping up against Google?

google-is-watching

Google is under siege. At least so it might seem if you look at several blogposts and news items in the past months. The siege mainly is aimed at privacy matters concerning the Silicon Valley giant. Google has made a few mistakes and is now paying the price.

Google Streetview is a nice tool Google developed (actually, they bought it and then made it into what it is now), but somehow its causing them a lot of issues, especially in Europe. People apparently love to wander through streets using Streetview and love to look at what is going on in the street across town but as soon as Streetview enters their street they feel their privacy is invaded. In some cases they respond a bit overreacted, in other cases, like when Google collected wifi data through their Streetview cars they were right. Google shouldn’t have done that. But are the reactions justified? Or are we making a lot out of nothing? (more…)

Google’s acquisitions (infographic)

I’ve been thinking about what would be a nice infographic to make, one which actually had some use, next to getting the link attention for which many of them were made. One I did think of is an overview of all the Google acquisitions, since Google is currently buying more than a company a month. Well, someone beat me to it: scores.org. They made a nice overview which, in contrary to others, also tries to look at the usefulness of an acquisition. Judge for yourself (after the read more)… (more…)

State of Search radioshow – episode 23: SES SF recap and new Google products

After a week without a show Bas and Roy returned to do another great show. They were joined by fellow blogger Bastian Grimm who covered SES San Francisco for State of Search. Bastian discussed the quality of SES San Francisco and gave some highlights of the show. They even got someone from the chatroom in the show to give his view on SES!

After the break Bas, Roy and Bastian discussed Google live updating results, which Rob Ousbey discovered last week and the possibility of getting more results from one domain now Google has changed their algorithm on that.

The shownotes are below. (more…)

Eric Schmidt: a newspaper will become highly personal

The never ending issue: how will newspapers evolve. And how will they make money? Google’s CEO Eric Schmidt has a pretty straight forward view on it. He believes there IS a future for newspaper and he believes Google can help out. At the Guardian Activate Summit in London on July 1st Schmidt talked to Alan Rusbridger about this topic. And he was very clear: newspapers will have to change. And Google wants to become the company that offers the pieces of the puzzle.
